I'll try to make this short and as to-the-point as possible.

-Boyfriend has told me he wants to marry me someday. Cue the Awwwws.

-Boyfriend was asking me about rings and weddings.

-I state I'm a low budget Courthouse kind of girl and as for rings - well I have always wanted a particular kind of ring/stone cut but feel awkward ever requesting it from a guy as it can be expensive. 1.5-2ct Asscher if you must know - so nothing extreme.

-I then go onto explain that I would have NO qualms with splitting the cost of my engagement ring since I'm the one asking for a certain kind and I would be happy to help pay.

He says that I should just pick out another kind of ring so he can pay for all of it.

It didn't get into an argument and I can always just buy a damn Asscher cut for myself as a right hand ring but....damn...I'm willing to pay for half or even more so he probably wouldn't end up paying more. I guess it's a pride thing? I figured it was stupid to even start to argue. I'm marrying him - not the ring. But dang...sure would have liked that asscher - not really even sure if I'd need/want an engagement ring if it isn't an Asscher - I'm not too keen on diamonds - just a wedding band. He might save more money than expected.

Anyone been in this kind of situation?
