I would like to hear from any adults being treated for ADD or ADHD, or people who know someone well who has been treated...

What treatment was used?

What symptoms improved?

What symptoms stayed?

I don't like feeling drugged, ie not in control of myself... but I feel like I am not in control of much right now. I am a very creative person, and have avoided treatment because I fear I may lose some of that... I am a writer, artist, businesswoman etc.

Have also avoided treatment because important people in my life insist that I'm just irresponsible, flighty, air-headed etc, That ADD does not exist, or that I use it as an excuse...

Any input would be great...

As it happens, I'm the secretary of an organization working on promoting AD/HD awareness.

Here are a couple of posts of mine with a lot of references on AD/HD:

That's why we badly need LOTS of public education about AD/HD. People simply do not understand that it is real and that it causes people a tremendous amount of difficulty.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in trying medication, under the guidance of a professional psychiatrist. Medication and therapy often help people. I've had both good and bad experiences, but medication did help me get to where I am now, which is much better than I was years ago.

I don't have any form of AD/HD, but I have been on medication before. Medication is your choice, and you have a right to discontinue it if you feel that you are uncomfortable with the changes it brings about in you, if there are any. It might be a good idea to talk about this option with some psychiatrists to learn more about the subject related to you as an individual.

I talked to the doctor today and she is going to set up an evaluation since my old tests are no longer available... Still wondering if the medication will help with the biggest issues in my life...

being able to focus on more than one task at a time...

It's entirely possible that, given a few weeks to kick in, medication might help you have more clarity of thought. Therapy would also help you sort out your stressful life, and give you a chance to vent :) I don't think that you need to worry — you are making a genuine effort and something good is sure to come of it.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I have talked to folks with AD/HD and I've read a lot of the boards (Yahoo alone has over 400 ADD groups) and the meds work wonderfully for lots of people and not great for some.

The ones for whom the meds work say they are finally living; they feel that they are their whole selves instead of being scattered.

Congratulations on seeking help and best of luck. You might want to join one of the forums. About.com has quite a good one but there are lots others. I can give you some links, if you like.
