Alright, so I have a wonderful boyfriend who does everything for me, I have a good family, good friends, I have a car, I have good grades, I graduate from high school in two weeks, yet I always am unhappy for some reason. I always try to be happy and enjoy things, but I just can't. For example, prom was last night and I couldn't even fully enjoy it because something is just wrong with me... I don't know what it is or how I can fix it. I do have a lot of self image problems. I am self conscious and I don't like my body and I don't really love myself. How can I fix this? I want to see a therapist and see if that will help.. Please give advice if you have any!

hey aimeeg, I think therapy might be helpful if you can afford it. it's possible you're depressed. i'm pretty sure there are some online depression screening tools available you might want to use. just google "depression screening"

otherwise, one thing you can do if you're not already doing it: try to focus on other people. you very well might already be doing this, so i hope you don't get offended. if you focus on other people and how you can be a good friend, etc., it's easier to ignore feelings of unhappiness. just don't "overdo" it.

also, you are kinda going through a transition stage of your life right now, according to some people - graduation from high school isn't the easiest period ever. so try not to get too worked up about being unhappy. not like that's easy, but you can try.

and i have a few questions actually -

how long have you felt like this?

how unhappy are you? (do you feel like this is the saddest period of your life to date?)

i hope at least SOMETHING i've said helps a little bit. hope you feel better!!

marigold7, I have felt like this for a few months now. Probably around 8 or 9 months. Also, no I do not feel like this is the saddest in my life I have been, but it's the weirdest. Every other time I've been sad in my life I had a reason to be, but now nothing is going wrong and I am still upset.

You answered your own question when you said that you do not love yourself. This is probably why you're unhappy.

I have been through depression issues before and like you there was nothing really wrong with my life aside from the fact that I did not like myself. There is no easy and fast solution really. In order to love yourself you need to build up self-esteem and self-confidence. It takes time, but you can do it.

I think that seeing a therapist is a great idea. That's what I did and it helped me. It also helped me to write in my journal and work towards my personal goals. It felt good to know something good would happen for me in the future if I put my mind to it and it gave me something to work towards. Also, doing things that make me feel happy like bike rides and spending time at the beach helped to lift my spirits when I felt down.

What do you normally do to relax when you feel stressed out? What sorts of things make you feel happy when you do them?

The advice marigold7 gave you is good. I only have one reservation. Online screening tools aren't very reliable. They're not weighted well. Leave that to a professional.

In preparation for your first therapy session, think about any family history of depression (even if it's the "weird aunt" you hardly see), life circumstances that are adding stress, any pre-existing conditions you have that can be contributing.

Hope it works out for you.
