For instance, there might be a poker (gambling) friend(s), a basketball friend, someone I play video games with, or a motorcycle buddy. Any single activity... But aside from this particular interest I never spend time or even talk to them. Is this a very common thing? Or do most people have a core group of friends they do many things with (chill, hang out, go to movies, bars, hiking, etc.)? Similar to how you might work with a guy/gal for years, then one day you quit and never contact them again. A "friendship" out of convenience. It almost feels like I might as well be playing with robots

I agree that these friends of convenience drop away very quickly. I prefer to invest my time in my close friends. It's funny that you mention us playing with robots and then a spam bot replies. It's as if it wanted to be your friend.
