I came up during the herpes scare before the HIV scare became known. In the press were stories that if you were sexually active the chances were 50/50 that you already had herpes. There was no social pressure to refrain from sex it was just something else to deal with, permanent but not as much of a problem as the other STDs for which treatments had been found during the earlier part of the century.
