I work part time as a sales associate in a card/gift shop. This was a position I never applied for it was literally "given" to me when my father was manager of the store when I was a freshman in high school. My father no longer works with the company, but I have stayed on. I stayed on because the new manager let me work whatever hours I wanted (and as a high school and then college student this was nice) and because my manager gave me an incredible amount of independence and responsibility. The pay is enough for me to meet my current obligations: cell phone bill, gas, car insurance, going out money, etc.

The thing is this was never supposed to be a long term job for me, I have no desire to progress further with this company or in the retail industry as a whole (although I'm sure they would make me a manager if I asked). My outlook was that as soon as I was hired for any one of the numerous internships I applied for I would leave retail (hopefully) for good. I was never hired for any of them.

Now I graduate college in two weeks, my original plan was to continue working at my current job until I got hired someplace else. But, my manager has recently decided to take a leave of absence for health reasons (to be honest she's probably never going to return, it's actually a sad story) and a new management team is going to be brought in. I will certainly give them a chance, but my interactions with them so far have been less than stellar.

So here's the crux of the matter: the store will be changing and I have no desire to be a part of the long term part of this change, I don't like working there, it's not giving me any kind of relevant work experience, and the pay is about average or a little below average. I have enough money saved to last 6 months to a year if I don't work at all and I am leaning toward quitting. So...am I completely delusional and making a horrible decision?

I suggest finding a new job before quitting. Get a new job before quitting. No point spending your resources.

Have any of your college friends have jobs that they can recommend you? Have them hook you up.

Now once you find a newer job, maybe take a long trip and do something you've always wanted to do.
