I have been trying to date and while I've met a few interesting men, nothing has worked out. And I've met more than a few flakes and wackados and just inappropriate men.

I've been mostly online dating, thinking that search parameters and online profiles would do lots of weeding out for me.

It hasn't been very successful. So I am thinking of asking my aunt to set me up. She knows loards of people through her work with support groups for people and families affected by addiction. I am very hesitant to date anyone with a drug or alcohol problem, but I know that there are people who've been ok for years who are now veyr nice and responsible.

What do you guys think? Have you ever been set up by a relative? Did it work out?

I see no problem with family setting you up if you approve. Though, id never let my family pair me up, it would be terrible.

I wouldn't feel comftorable with someone with an addiction. However, if resolved for years I don't see a reason to deem them undateable. :)

She knows lots of people from her work with addicts, but they aren't all addicts themselves.

I am not comfortable with someone with addiction either. I like to have the occasional drink or night out, and I wouldn't feel comfortable if doing that would set someone else off on a downward spiral.

If you think that she could find you a match or a fun date, it's worth a shot. :)

My mother's been trying to get me to date others for years, regardless of the fact that I've been with my guy for 5. She thinks she can find me a better match.

That's not cool.

I don't know if she can or not, but I haven't been able to find anyone who clicks, so its worth a try.

Just go in with no expectations, go with the flow. Makes things much easier and without pressure.

On another note,

I understand how difficult online dating is, you have to go through quite a few stones till you find your diamond. I know quite a few people who've met there partners on OKC. It took them some time, and some funny experiences first.

Why not just find groups involved in things you are interested in. There has to be some good single men in these groups.

I live in a rural area, aside from work -which is a bad idea, and church - which I am not into, there are no "groups"

There are no close areas where you can drive into town?

town I went to college in an hour and a half away. Hometown an hour away. Bigger cities two and three hours away.

Close enough for a weekend adventure, not really close enough for dating and building a relationship.
