It's been a month since my girlfriend broke up with me. Aside from an email she sent me on my birthday, I have not spoken with her since. I know that for my own sake (and hers) that I needed to step back and give space. I'd like to speak with her at some point, but I just don't when would be the best time. I'm still a bit upset with this situation, so I'm wondering if I should wait longer to contact her. OR do I contact her at all and let her make the first contact?

Any suggestions or guidances is much appreciated it.

Thanks!

maybe since you're still kinda hung up on her you should wait a bit longer before contact. it sounds like you still have feelings so her sending you a happy bday email maybe sparked something inside of you and makes you feel like she may be thinking the same things you are about the relationship however there's nothing worse than reading too far into something and having your heart broken all over again. i think you should wait a bit longer to see what she does. thank her for the kind wishes but leave it at that. dont talk about your relationship or feelings just a simple thank you and done. how she responds to that should give you a hint as to where she's at emotionally. if she replies your welcome and thats it then dont say another word. if she has anything else she wants to say she will say it once she sees you're not replying anymore, trust me :)
