Feeling fed up today, cos I cant see my BF this weekend!!!!!!!! We dont have enough money to be able to see eachother. I have to get car tax next week and have a big car meet arranged for the Bank Holiday weekend (already booked mnths ago!), so need cash for that.

The issue too, he is always saying he doesnt have much money. My moan is that he smokes and drinks alot (I know this wont help for this weekend but) if he stopped smoking and cut right down on his drinking he'll have more money, simple.

How can I tell him this without causing an argument?

Thanks

Mercedes,

It's not really all that simple. Both nicotine and alcohol, especially in excess, are addictive behaviors. It's not simply a matter of putting them down and quitting.

In fact, the "just quit" mentality from significant others, parents, family, and friends can be more damaging to someone who is thinking about or trying to quit.

If you want him to quit, you have to make sure that he quits for himself instead of for someone else.

Just say "I'd like you to think about quitting smoking. If you do decide to, know that I'll be here to help you."
