It's often like they don't want you, but they also don't want anyone else to have you. I believe it comes down to them still having very strong feelings for you, even though they say they haven't. Put it this way, I was the dumper a few years back. I totally fell out of love with her and had to end it. So a few months later when I find out she's in another relationship I was happy for her. No anger or upset or feeling of loss, none of that. My feelings, in that way, for her had long gone so it didn't bother me. Compare that to someone who reacts when a dumpee meets someone new. It's a perfect example of the dumper still having feelings... and maybe regrets!
