My boyfriend of 2 years has just told me his friend has got him a permanent job in Canada for him. I live in the UK and I know it would be too hard to keep the relationship going when we are that far apart. He says he doesn't want to leave me but I'm the only good thing here in his life at the moment because he hates his current job. We have been best friends for years before we got together so this has hit me hard and I'm heartbroken at the news. I would move with him but I am planning to go to university to study nursing soon. I just need some advice if someone is in the same position as me or anyone that can help because I am a mess at the moment. Thanks.

Hi there and welcome to LS!

Im originally from Manchester (:-) ) and moved to the US in January for a great job opportunity. My boy is still in the UK and we're doing ok so far. We are fortunate in that we can afford to go see each other every 2 months, which is what we have planned for the rest of the year.

I think if you're really committed to each other you can make it work- sounds like you have a really solid foundation and SKYPE/email/visits home really do help!

Maybe you could do your nursing degree in the UK and look at coming out to Canada once you qualify? There are great ops for nurses here. That way at least you have an 'end date' in mind?

Best of luck in whatever you decide :bunny:

Thank you for your advice it haas made me feel a bit better about the situation, it's just worried me because we see each almost everyday without fail and we are best friends. But I suppose if we try it will work.

Thanks again.

It can work if you are both certain you will be living closer/together again in time, it's essential to have an end goal to work towards, and a rough time scale. LDR's won't work if there is no end in sight. They also need enough contact (skype, phone, texts, emails/letters) to retain the bond and keep you both happy, and as many visits as you can manage. They also require good communication and honesty.

Good luck, if you both want it 100% and work at it you can do it.
