Me and my partner split last week and its affecting me more than I thought it would. I feel like I'm torturing myself with the thoughts I'm having too. How do I stop thinking about my partner moving on and being with someone else? The thoughts arent very nice and its very upsetting when I think of him physically with someone new

You divert.

Most likely, what is happening, is that you get a glimmer of a thought in your head - but you don't stop there.

you expand, you build on it, and you make it snowball until it avalanches through your mind, taking every object in its way.

 

The secret is to catch it smartly by the wings, while it's still a glimmer.

 

The way you do that is to recognise the instant you start thinking, that the ball is in your court.

It's your mind, they're your thoughts, you're putting them there.

You can change them and prevent them from getting all-invasive.

 

The way you do that is to stop it st the barrier, and literally say to yourself:

 

"Oh, hello Mr sabotage! visiting again? going to try to make me miserable?

I don't think so. I know you want to come in and be my companion, but see... you only make me feel crappy when you do.

so now, I'm going to play some music really loud, or go for a walk, or read a Book that requires some concentration.

Thanks for popping by, but you're not wanted here...."

 

And switch to thinking something else.

Some nice ideas there. It reminds me of the amount of people who don't know you can't tilt your head all the way back and stick out your tongue!
