Just wondering, for the sake of conversation, what is the measure for various points in time within the scope of an exclusive relationship?

I've been dating my current BF for about 7 months now, and people still tell me, "well, you're still in a new relationship." It's beginning to annoy me- it really doesn't feel 'new' to me anymore, and it being labeled as such feels almost, frustrating (not sure if that's the right word?) to me. Not sure why, but I am certainly curious as to what is 'new' to everyone.

I'm sure it also depends how serious and such you are, but roughly speaking what do you guys think about the following phrases (in terms of time)

1- "We're in new relationship."

2- "We've been dating awhile."

3- "We've been dating forever."

Also- is there an in between phase from being 'new' to 'dating for awhile?'-- because that's where I feel like I am now.

My personal feelings:

New relationship- less than 6 months

Awhile- 1 year+

Forever- 3+ years

Then again, I'm only 23 so it may differ as you get older.... thoughts?

It really depends on the person's age. When you're in middle school (or Hollywood), dating from a week to a month feels like a while, whereas to the rest of the world, that's nothing. Considering that you've been together for 7 months, and you're early 20's, I would say that you guys have been dating a little while.

For me it's:

0-6 months - new

7-12 months - little while

1-2 years - quite some time

3 years+ - pretty long time

50 years+ forever

I generally view anything less than a year as still 'new' to the dating scene, but I'm not going to get into all of these layers upon layers upon layers of descriptive phrases for the length of time you've been dating. When you're talking to folks who have been together for 5 years, maybe even decades, of course they're going to refer to a relationship that's lasted 7 months as "new."

"Dating a while" strikes me as anything over a year. Dating forever seems like...well...forever, doesn't it? :D I don't know. I'd suppose "dating forever" could come in after the 2 or 3 year mark.

Try not to get offended when people say that your relationship is new. To you it may seem like ages, but it's all just relative anyway.
