TurtlePower Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) Any help is appreciated to help calm me down in my latest job situation. Currently, I have been working at my job for about 10 months now. I got hired for this job with hardly any prior experience, I already have a experienced manager and coworker who has trained and developed me over my time. My job entails a lot of nuances and various training scenarios, almost everyday I learn something new, so suffice to say the learning curve is pretty steep. I was told on my first day, that it would take at least 18 months to fully grasp the majority of my job duties. In the meantime, I have been brought a long for some big projects as well as been shielded from others (Due to my inexperience). Overall, I would rate my training a solid B so far. However, I feel my whole career is jeopardy now... Why? My well experienced co worker found another job and is leaving this week. Right in the middle of HUGE projects we have been working on and he has been working on. I feel completely stressed because, do they honestly think I can handle and make up for what he has done?? I am in no way ready to handle what he has been working on (I dont even know what he has been working on- remember I have been shielded?) Also, my boss leaves overseas for another project in a few weeks leaving me all by myself. She's says not to feel like I'm all alone in this, but its hard not to. The problem is that I feel they think I know as much as he did and I clearly don't. Oh the stress is killing me. I feel like quitting and just run away from it all! Help! frd150 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Perhaps you should just be honest with your boss about your limitations but still do it in a way that shows your eagerness to take on the task. Better to lay it out up front then run into an issue half way through. Good luck...you have ten months in,I'm sure you'll do fine.

The bigger your problem the smaller your God. You can do it!! Now is the time to shine. Anytime something difficult or dang near impossible came at me I welcomed the challenge. You just do what you can, the best you can. Relax, it's just a job, breath....take breathers that refresh yourself. You can do it.
Kamille Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 You're allowed to continue learning and to grant yourself the right to simply do your best. Unless you're suddenly in charge of life and death situations, you're also allowed to make mistakes - yes, even if it means some company losing money somewhere and/or some people getting pissed off. I imagine your boss was aware you were shielded from certain projects. Do your best, contact her when necessary. Ask your colleague if he could be available in the next few weeks to answer questions you might have.

Approach your boss with the idea of making sure you're on the same page about priorities, outcomes, so on. Impress upon her that the purpose of the meeting is that you want to do a good job, meet her expectations, and ask some questions (not that you're stressing out). Good luck. You can do it!
Lucky_One Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Very doubtful that they would want to replace you at the same time that they are looking for your co-workers replacement. It is amazingly expensive to hire and train a worker, and having to start all over from scratch is a costly PITA. They aren't going to fire you and then have NO ONE who can do anything.
Author TurtlePower Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Thanks for all the support and words of encouragement from everyone. I am about a month into my "flying solo" stress and so far I have been ok. Not great, not terrible, just ok. I spoke to my boss before she left and she assured me that would be people around to help me which there have been. She returns in two weeks and I am eager to hear what she has to say because frankly I haven't spoken to her hardly at all while we have been working. I guess that's trust? Either way, I am weathering through the proverbial storm day by day. Thanks again to everyone! You have no idea what it means to me.
