Online dating is kind of scary for women sometimes. My friend was raped after she met a guy, so sometimes the nicer approach makes you seem more approachable. It really depends on the woman though, but I'd be surprised if they were really picky about how you asked it. I think its more important when you do. If you ask too quickly, you seem like you are rushing things and might have bad motives and if you wait too long they might lose interest. If they are enjoying talking to you though and it seems to be the right time, then it should work out regardless of how you ask it.

It avoids the nice guy stink. And these don't exactly scream out "rapist" either. They're simply straight forward questions.

Tell her you're an old fashioned guy who doesn't think it's right to ask a girl out via email or IM and that you'd like to chat on the phone to see if things can go further than just emailing. If she still doesn't want to give you her number (and doesn't ask for yours) then you have your answer.
