wideawake Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 I have had some issues with substance abuse, I have a personality that lends itself to over-indulgence. This is all pretty much in the past, but it does rear it's ugly head from time to time. I can become really paronoid when I'm under stress, and allow that to run rampant in other aspects of my life that it has no place. I procrastinate like a mo fo....i.e., I should be doing a ton of work at this very moment. Probably a ton of other stuff that I'm repressing right at this moment... Quote
saintfrancis Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 My fatal flaw is that I don't trust people enough and am very cynical. I think, no, I KNOW that this has a negative impact on my relationships, mostly on my romantic R's. It's a demon I wrestle with constantly. Sometimes I can overcome it quite nicely, then other times I lock myself into a cage of mistrust. Good thing I have the key, for those times I decide to use it. Quote
Author jenny Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 o! how do you decide to use it? (the key) what is your checklist, i mean? Quote
saintfrancis Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 The key is my own conscience, I guess, for lack of better word. Deciding to "use the key" happens when I try and step back and see how my behavior and my personal demons affect those that I love. For instance, I've had some email exchanges recently with someone I'm very close to, who has told me almost in these words, that he feels like I am continually accusing him of doing bad things behind my back. Wow. To hear someone tell you that you're acting like an ass is a bitter pill to swallow, and kind of worrisome because it makes me wonder if I have alienated other people, and they just didn't bother telling me? If he wasn't right, then I'd tell him he needs to grow up, but the fact is, he is right, at least in part (he also tends to read a lot into things that I say that sometimes just aren't there, so we both create the situation in part). I sometimes drop comments that I shouldn't, mostly out of fear of being screwed over again. But, what a crappy way to handle that fear. There are more grown-up ways to handle it. So anyway, the key for me means not only putting my fear aside for a moment but also really listening to what people are telling me about how I affect them. And, realizing that if I have acted in a hurtful manner, there is something I can do about it! I can be aware of that behavior and stop myself from doing it in the future. Quote
morrigan Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 I'm way too judgemental and it takes quite a bit of time for me to trust someone. I tend to be harsh on myself as well, but that's not a bad thing. I don't procrastinate--I am overly driven to get something finished. If I don't finish it, I'll just keep worrying about it. Quote
SoleMate Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 On the surface, I am caring and compassionate, but deep down, I am a user and I am ashamed of it. I blame other people for my own problems. I am way too proud of my own intelligence and attractiveness. Quote
zarathustra Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 I am way too proud of my own intelligence and attractiveness. But SoleMate, that describes the overwhelming majority of Shackers. Nothing new, there. Quote
moimeme Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 We'll just start having to call her 'Merry' Poppins.... Righty-oh, Arabess! LOL 'Practically perfect in every way'. Guess that makes me 'flat, unpredictable, and invariably hypocritical, dishonest, or lacking in rigour'. Could it be I have difficulty resisting a challenge? Quote
Author jenny Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 er...weird. ok. for clarity: this thread was not actually about you, moi, specifically. we asked this at our weekend dinner parties, too. sorry you got all spazzy and personal; i did not mean to trigger. Quote

I understand about the 'using' thing....but the deal is this....WHY change your own tire when you can smile on the side of the road at some passing by guy and HE'LL stop and change it????? With the fun twist being....YOU can do it faster but don't want to get sweaty. Quote
