This issue is key to both Americas economic and social future. The amount of boys attending college has steadily declined over the years to the point now where it is simply absurdly low. Across the nation the gender gap is about 57-43. Since boys also drop out at a higher rate, by graduation this number actually rests at a solid 60-40.

Whatever you may have thought regarding Musemaj's recent thread about women wanting to marry up... the statistics clearly show most women prefer to marry at least someone equal... and rank intelligence/education as an important trait in a future mate.

Economically, women simply are not interested in mathematics and engineering in large enough numbers. Companies in the U.S. will literally be forced to either pay ridiculous sums to import researchers... or begin outsourcing some of our highest paid jobs.

Why boys are not attending college is really up for debate. Personally, I believe it is the school systems constant focus on non-cognitive skills that is the problem. The focus is on things like the ability to pay attention in class, to work with others, to organize and keep track of homework, and to seek help from others... ect. All skills that boys tend develop stronger at a later age.

While feminists and the media fought like wild animals to put affirmative action in place for women back in the 1970's... They have so far shown either disinterest or open hostility to the idea of doing similar for boys. This will make it a serious uphill battle to make any big changes. Feminists literally control half our political system and dominate the state school system.

What can be done to fix this?

To be honest I don't really care if the future dating landscape looks poor for future women... I'm sure they will find some way to make do. I see that every year we graduate fewer and fewer students from the hard sciences... and I just witnessed a company completely outsource it's engineering department because it couldn't find enough qualified workers, laying off 20 people in the process.

Nothing. Liberals do and will continue to dominate the media and education system, slowly sending the entire country off of a cliff. Not that conservatives are much better. The underlying problem has arisen from a general populace of people too stupid to form coherent opinions of their own anymore. Thus they wear either their red or blue coats and let cable news do all the thinking for them. Why is it this way? Look at George Carlin's rant about the system.

As for women wanting to marry up -- they do. That's another one of the fundamental problems with our schizophrenic society. Women want equality, and they also want to be privileged AND also to marry men who make more than they do. Such a society cannot endure in perpetuity. And this country will not endure. It will probably burn to the ground as soon as the dollar collapses anyway, which isn't far off.
