...Had cosmetic surgery for Self-Improvement and Personal Well-being?

Did it have the desired effect on your confidence/self-image? Did it end up making things worse?

I'm thinking of have a nosejob later this year, when I can afford it (going abroad as it's 50% cheaper), I'm 99.9% sure I want it done. The missig 0.01% is mainly wondering whether I should just suck it up be happy with what I have.

I know;

1. Theres nothing *wrong* with me now, I just want an improvement on something I feel could be better.

2. It won't solve my confidence issues, but I hope it'll be one step, helping me feel less self conscious (my nose is the only thing I don't like about me). I've been through manic, crippling depression over the last few years; through counciling and pushing myself foward I've all but recovered, so I definatly don't see having any procedure as a magic route to happiness.

Anyway, advice, opinions, anecdotes, anything, would be really useful.

Also, I'm 21 and a guy. I was thinking about having it done before i'm 22 at the end of this year, for what it's worth. I might post some pics up later to see what people think, too.

Thanks :)

I haven't. I think a nose job can be a good thing. Just be careful not to start thinking that you can do other things to your face too much or you could wind up regretting it. You know the examples. But I had a friend--a guy--who played keyboards in my friend's band. He got one, it was successful and it dramatically improved his appearance. We didn't even recognize him but that was in a good way. Good luck if you really think you will benefit from it. Don't let anyone sell you on nose reshaping in terms of width and all that or those chin implants or collagen treatments for lips and eyes. Those things can turn you into Michael Jackson or Jocelyn Wolfenson.

Why don't you post some pics now before deciding to get it done.

Yes I have thought of it, but only recently.

I have cauliflower ears that aren't symmetrical, I was mis-diagnosed because I hadn't actually got them through boxing or fighting, so kept getting told it was an infection but by the time a different doctor finally agreed with me what it was, they were disfigured and now need surgery to correct them. Obviously I am furious.

So yeah, I would for my ears but no other parts of my face, I didn't think about surgery before either.

I've just had some laser stuff done, to plump up aging face.

Personally, I leave the deep theoretical questions to others. If you have a block in life that decreases your happiness in some way and a way around it, well then I think it just comes down to cost/benefit ratio.

I'd go for it. :)

I think there's nothing wrong with it. We all get our hair fixed. People fix their teeth if they need fixing and that's classed as perfectly normal.

If you had a big scratch on your expensive car, wouldn't you get it fixed? Surely your face is more important than any car?

One of the reasons I work out is to get a better looking body. Nothing wrong with self improvement.

Summed it up nicely.

Thanks for the replies guys! Really interesting and helpful points; good advice, and it will be heeded. I knew I came to LS for a reason :)

Anyway here are some pictures of me:

A profile shot. Even though I like the shape, I think it sticks out slightly to far.

http://img685.imageshack.us/i/66395986.jpg/

Front shot, from when I was 17 lol, but shows it best

http://img847.imageshack.us/i/48278831.jpg/

From the top, showing all the contours that I dislike and would like 'smoothed out'

http://img860.imageshack.us/i/16390380.jpg/

This one I like :D Here, thanks to flattering lighting, it looks well shaped and smooth, not too long or bulbous. Strong, but not 'big'. This is what I'd be aiming for with surgery.

Thankyou again for all help, past and future. And hello to anyone who recognises me :lmao:

I honestly think it looks better with the original pics - looks more like a man.

I do not look at your pics and see "NOSE," I think it's fine. But if you want work done on it, all I would say is not too much. Button nose looks girly. Good luck.

Yup, not too much. You don't want to be going the Jacko route.

Having now seen your pics I say don't do it. You don't have the classic conditions that call for a nose job and would be engaging in something that might backfire on you. A nose job is for someone who really has an unsightly schnozola where any reduction to the problem area is a plus. But if you don't need a reduction and get one you could look weird and there isn't any getting your old nose back.

I don't think you should, JMO.

I have thought of getting a boob job, but no face stuff. And from certain angles I think my nose looks big, but it would scare me to change it, I would be scared of losing "me."

Some people feel alienated by their differences, others see them as what makes them unique. I think you look fine the way you are.

You seem to have a good grasp on the concept that it will not change any poor self esteem issues. That's a plus.

Wow that was a U-turn, lol. It's certainly given me another perspective. I won't say it's changed my mind completly, but i'm definatly going for the more subtle approach if anything.

In the short term it's made me feel alot better about myself already, so thankyou Loveshack :)

I vote don't. I think your facial features are very good looking and I think you have a normal nose. I've met a couple of other men who wanted what I would consider a feminine looking nose, and I don't really see the point, aesthetically speaking.

I'm having major plastic surgery done. I realize I have a low self esteem, and that won't fix it, but it sure can't hurt either.:) Go for it
