Disillusioned Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Back when dinosaurs walked the Earth and there were still printed personal ads in papers and mags, I remember one ad by a 57-yo woman which stood out because she wrote about herself as if she were a classic car. Then a couple of days ago, I got to thinking: what would women think if I wrote a profile in poetry form? Not a trippy poem or a corny poem or a silly poem, but just one where I described myself, interests, what I'm looking for, and all that malarkie, except it would all be in rhyming verse? Would women go for that?
Intricategirl Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 No. I once got a message from a guy whose profile wasn't a poem- his MESSAGE to me was. And it referenced stuff in my profile. It was supposed to be sweet, but it was kind of creepy and weird. Massive bonus points if you can do a great profile in a haiku. Not a series of haiku, but a single one. THAT would be awesome (and probably impossible).
Author Disillusioned Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I'm not talking "roses are red, violets are blue" here. What could possibly be creepy about describing myself and the person I want to meet in the form of a clever poem? It's not like I'm making shrunken heads in the basement and am looking for someone to be my personal Igor.
Author Disillusioned Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Oh well... their loss not yours, right?
SmileFace Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Profile poems are great. I wish I still had my OkC account so I could have shared with you this guys profile that was a poem. It was witty and delightful. Also poes written in the third person... rock!
Intricategirl Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 It was creepy because it was a message, not a profile. He read my profile, responded to various things in it, and took the time to compose it in a rhyme scheme. And think about it... what rhymes with art? Most people are going to struggle to come up with anything other than "fart". I could imagine him spending a lot of time, poring over my profile, trying to find anything that would work. It seemed too invested too early. I had a different guy that wrote me a poem much later, before we met but after we had exchanged quite a few messages. THAT was hot! And it may be my opinion only, but rhymes are always campy.
Eeyore79 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I tried putting a poem on my profile way back when I used to do online dating. Unattractive men wrote poems to me in reply, and I felt extra guilty ignoring them because they'd obviously put in a lot of effort. I also got a lot of random messages criticizing my writing style and scansion
Author Disillusioned Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Ha ha... I'm having a good laugh trying to envision some leather-clad, scraggly-haired heavy metal type guy who calls everyone "dude" struggling with a rhyming dictionary. Umm... uhh... dude, like, what else rhymes with "dude"?
