I started jogging earlier this week, so I've only gone a few times. But while I'm jogging I get this really bad pain in my lower left abdomen, kind of by my hip bone. I got it this morning and while I was walking it stayed. I noticed that pushing in where the pain was seemed to help. I usually drink a good amount of water while I'm at work in the mornings. So I probably drank about 24 oz. between 8-930 this morning and ran at about 11. I stretched before and after running. Any suggestions on the cause of the pain and how to fix it?

I've heard it may be my breathing or I'm wondering if maybe I didn't stretch well enough. Any help would be great! Thank you!

Keep in mind that running/jogging is actually pretty high impact. Going from being not jogging regularly to jogging even 3-4 times per week is a big change for the body, even if you're in good shape to begin with.

My guess is that you are probably experiencing some sort of minor overuse injury in your left hip flexor. You may want to stop jogging for a few days and let it heal up. These kinds of things tend to get worse if you don't back off.

Maybe spend a week going for some long, brisk walks and doing some stretching. If it still doesn't go away or if it gets worse, you might want to consult a professional.

Try hip flexor flexes. Lay on your back and put your fingers where the hip meets your leg. Concentrate on flexing this area over and over for up to 20 seconds beginning then build to up to a minute. This will help increase the strength of that area. I used to have really bad core strength and this is one a physical therapist taught me. Works well. Also, think about your eating prior to running. Heavy or light that day before run? Could be a classic cramp....would need more info on what your physical condition was prior to your jogging to determine more. But tman has it right. Take a break and take it easy...then build s l o w l y. I am up to almost 10 miles straight now. Took 3 months to get there though.

I'd recomend walking at a brisk pace for set amounts of time. Running may be to high impact. Just remember if you feel like you are getting injured its best to give it a break and switch what you are doing.

It depends on what it feels like. Does it feel like muscular strain or does it feel like internal pain originating from an organ?

It's quite common for the liver to be in pain after a duress of running, especially in new runners. If that's the case then it will most likely go away over time as your cardio improves, your running becomes more graceful, and your organs get used to the light impacts your body endures when running.

If it's a muscular strain, you may just require additional or more appropriate stretching before hand.
