Hi all,

I would like to buy new night clothes for my gf.

We've been going out for 5 months and since we are both failry young (I'm in my mid 20s and she is early 20s) we are both not too experienced. It was 3 months of dating before we slept together and now it is a regular occurance.

For our 6 month anniversary I would like to buy her some new nightwear. We both have normal trousers and old tshirts but I would like to buy her something nicer to sleep in.

Since this is all new to me I would like to start on the 'safer' side and start with a nice Camisole.

Now, my gf is slim (a US size 8) with a small chest - I think she's an A but not bigger than that.

So many camisoles I see have a plunge neckline. Is this an issue for girls with smaller breasts? Should I try to find something with a straight cut across the chest instead?

Thanks

Why don't you invite her to go shopping for the nightwear together? That's what I usually do. You can both see how it looks on her and find something that both of you really like, and that's comfortable for her to wear.

I agree, go together. If my boyfriend ever had to buy me any type of clothes on his own, he'd be in trouble.

The reason simply being that women's sizing just is not uniform from store to store...your gf could wear a 38A from one bra designer and a 36B from another designer. A size S at one shop is a size M at another shop.

Then there's the whole issue of fit - which women tend to be more picky about than men - even if something is our size we might not like the "fit" of it. You want her to love the way she looks in her new goodies so that she's confident and happy when she wears them to bed. :]

Shopping together for intimate wear can be fun, and I bet your girlfriend will like the idea. :]

Thanks for those replies guys.

I'd like for this purchase to be as a surprise for the anniversary.

What would you think if your partner said to you:

"I'd like to buy you some new night clothes and think it would be really fun if you came along with me"

Is that a suitable way of phrasing it?

Thanks

Size 8 is big. With an A cup? Go back and recheck before you buy her anything.

If possible... take her shopping with you. Women like gifts, but they like shopping WAY more.

I'd broach the idea with her first. Somehow find a way to build it into a natural conversation.

It always kind of bugs me when guys want to gift women with lingerie unless it's what the woman wants. It would be like a woman buying her husband a vacuum cleaner.

Size 8 is not big by most peoples standards. And that has nothing to do with your cup size. I personally have no problem with a plunging neckline as long as the cups aren't too big, because that would look bad. But like pps have said, fit and style is a pretty personal thing, so I would say have her go with.

Huh...? Size 8 is about 38" around the hips. When I was dating my xGF I felt like that was kinda big.

OP, I think that a v-neck cami is fine. I would go with a size S, if that is how the sizing is. My best friend is an A cup, and she wears v-neck everythings, and they are actually very flattering to her breasts.

Happy Anniversary! She will love the surprise, and will love seeing what it is that you would like to see her in.

She's a 10 UK which is thought was an 8 US - might be wrong about that one. Either way, she wears mostly 'small' sized stuff. . . . .

I think I'll bring it up when I see her next - maybe try to segue into it from 'The weather is getting warmer, I reckon it's time to change to my summer pyjamas. . . . .' and then take it from there.

Thanks again :)

Based on the current vanity sizing in the U.S., it's more likely she wears a U.S. 6. Neither large or small.

Yes, do ask her about it. She might prefer cotton pyjamas, than anything polyester or acrylic. Silk is nice too.

Most places I shop, an XS is a size 2-4, small is a size 6-8, Medium is 10-12, Large is 14, etc. So I guess you just prefer extra small women, which is your perogative, but it is not considered large by standard sizing.

Seriously... I don't really understand cup sizes. I dated a woman that was supposedly a DD and I think she had smaller breasts that an ex that was a C cup. Does shape factor into it at all?

Dunno... I just have found that most women who are smalls are not bigger than me. I wear a 32.

I thought these sizes were set in stone based on inches like men's pants?

No... I love thick women! The best woman I've ever been with was size 12. :)

Not even close. Vanity sizing has taken over the U.S. and has also invaded Canada due to the amount of cross-border interactions. For women like myself, it's getting more and more challenging, finding casual clothing that fits right off the shelf.

Cup size is just what it sounds like, the actual "cup" of the bra, the part that the, um, meat of the boob fits into. For lack of better words, lol. Not sure of the discrepancy you have found with your mates. A lot of women do not wear the correct cup size for themselves and don't really know what size they are.

32 is your waist size. Women mostly are much curvier than men, ie, a woman's hips generally go out from thier waist. Therefore, hip size is not the same as waist size. A woman can have a 26 inch waist and 36 inch hips for example. "Hip size" would be larger if they have an ample butt/hips/more "curves".

I wish.

Cup sizes are relative, not absolute. You calculate the cup size by taking the difference between the band and bust size. The A cup on a 38A isn't the same volume as an A cup on a 32A. In terms of volume, a 36A = 34B = 32C.

Yes, it's confusing, which is why most people find out that they've been wearing the wrong size when they get fitted by a professional.

Nope. Even a single brand can be inconsistent. This is why I can't buy a piece of clothing without trying it on first and this is another reason why OP shouldn't buy something for his girlfriend without her input.

I get it. My waist is a 30-32... however my butt must be a 34... otherwise my pants would fall down. :)

And I stand corrected on the cup issue, thanks sweetjasmine! Every woman needs to go get her bra size measured by a pro! It's so worth it.

As a woman I think size 8 is big. I am in my thirties and a size 00

Size 0 vanity sizing is too big for me :)

I can't help it, I just like to brag...

Well it depends where people live. In Australia a size 8 is pretty much as small as clothes go, occasionally you can find size 6. But even my skinny skinny tiny tiny friends wear size 8 over here.

Bragging? Really? Maybe, I guess, if you consider being that skinny attractive. I am not that skinny, thankfully; I wear a size 8, and I have a pretty good figure for an old broad like me, especially after having a child. My son, for example, has a very skinny aunt (5'5" and about 110 pounds), and hates to hug her, as he says you can feel the bones in her arms and back. So I will stick happily with my 8, and take all my hugs!

And you can take THAT as bragging!

I think I might know where this is going, but is a £50 gift card to a specific place NOT the way to go?

Is this a case of 'manning up' and just being bold and asking her to come shopping with me? I don't want to buy anything crazy, just new pyjamas! I'd like to buy her something cute, but with something else to it ;)

My worry is that she'll agree to go and we'll end up at a regular department store with another set of old tshirt and trousers. . . .

Don't do a gift voucher!

I am guessing you are in the UK by the £ sign. There are plenty of decent shops on the high street where you will be able to find something pretty and not OTT. Have a think about what colours your girlfriend likes to wear - especially underwear. If she likes creams and whites, do not go and buy red! If she likes plain and simple, do not buy something very lacy. If she tends to cover up her chest, then don't buy something with a plunging neck line - try to buy something SHE would choose to wear rather than something you would like to see her in.

Also - if there is a way you can check out her clothes/bra size without her knowing.... If in doubt between two different sizes, buy the smaller size ;):D

Take her to Victoria's Secret. ;)

This thread has made me even more confused about woman's sizes. My exgf is 5'10" 140lbs and she is a size 4. When shopping for jeans she would get them from the junior's section. I don't understand how someone that tall could wear junior size jeans....I'm so confused...:o

Since its the early stage of the relationship and one that deserves a wee bit of celebration, there is nothing wrong with a gift card along with a sweet card that says, May I cordially escort you on the shopping treat!

This way you grace the gifter and extend an offer to be there to join in the selection.

If she so chooses the trousers and sweat shirt, so be it, she feels comfortable and that says so much about a relationship.:)
