ivalm Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 (edited) Hello all, Not exactly a dating question, but something related with looks, which IS related to dating, which is.. well.. the truth is this is the only forum (in particular THIS subforum) which I frequent and I need unbiased outsider opinion So recently I went to get myself a new set of glasses, which is a long term investment for me, my current glasses are 3 years old; also, this new pair is very expensive (high-end frame + I have very strong prescription so it's a high index transition lense with UV/scratch coating). Unfortunately, I can't really see much without my prescription so I can't quite look in the mirror. This is why I brought a friend with me to tell me if they think they like the frame and how it sits on me. So, we looked and looked and the one frame he said fit me best was this semi-rimless prada (of all things ). I have to admit that comfort-wise it was a very good fit, as in it sat very sturdily and didn't pressure anything but wasn't loose anywhere. However, I've never had semi-rimless before and now as I think about it more I can't recall ever noticing someone wearing semi-rimless glasses. All of this made me very self-conscious about this pair as I'm afraid may be it will look weird or dorky or otherwise negative... I think I may be able to cancel the order if I call on Monday. On the other hand, I do feel awkward because I already bought the pair/lenses and also because this way I would have to essentially go back on a decision which was suggested to me by a friend. My question to everyone, what do you think about semi-rimless glasses? Are they generally frowned upon? Do you think they can be cool? Many thanks! PS: I looked on the web to give you guys a better view of what the frame looks like, and I think it's something like in the link below: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0031HHDJU/ref=asc_df_B0031HHDJU1479155/?tag=prontocom92558-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B0031HHDJU&linkCode=asn Edited March 26, 2011 by ivalm
Stung Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I think that so much rests on how they look on your particular face that it's impossible to come up with a really helpful answer that will apply to you, without pictures. Not soliciting pictures, just pointing out that glasses that look cool and complimentary to one face will look awful on somebody else. In general, semi-rimless glasses CAN be good. I recently picked some out for my husband and they look pretty hot on him, although I haven't been a huge fan of the style before. The particular pair you linked to do nothing for me and seem kind of blah by themselves, BUT they might be transformed into something fantastic by your bone structure and coloring, it's impossible for me to know.
Author ivalm Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 But there is nothing particularly negative about the style as a whole? That's a significant part of my concern.. it's just I don't see other people wearing them.. although a quick google search revealed that appearntly Sarah Palin does..
Stung Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Far be it from me to suggest you take up Sarah Palin as a role model in ANY capacity! But, no, I don't think they're so associated with her as to be iconic of her style. I see people wearing them sometimes in my area, and as I said, I actually picked some out for my husband the last time we went shopping for new glasses. His are a different style than the ones you linked, with a bolder upper rim, flared at the outer corners, in tortoiseshell. I was neutral about them on the shelf, but on his face--he looks GREAT in them. I tried a pair on myself, but they didn't work on me at all, I need the rims all the way around.
Survivor12 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I was looking at a pair of semi rimless myself when the technician advised me that since my prescription was a strong one, I should avoid them because it would accentuate the thickness of the lenses.
Eternal Sunshine Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I wear semi-rimless now when working. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that style if it suits your face...it would help if you took some pictures and posted. P.S. not sure how strong is your prescription. Mine is fairly weak @ -1.25.

Mme. Chaucer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 They're cool. Personally, though, I prefer the horn-rimmed, Buddy Holly type.
Author ivalm Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 (edited) Ok.. so ES inspired me to get a photo taken.. so here is me: http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/8200/closeupbetter.jpg Clearly, these are my current glasses, which are not half-rimmed Edited March 26, 2011 by ivalm
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I think you'd look cool/good with full-on glasses-glasses, like Weezer style, kinda. Have you tried those?
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 They're cool. Personally, though, I prefer the horn-rimmed, Buddy Holly type. Oh! That's what I meant... for ivalm specifically. He has the face/style to pull it off, I think.
Author ivalm Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 (edited) They're cool. Personally, though, I prefer the horn-rimmed, Buddy Holly type. OMG! Lol, I'm a bit afraid to look like uber-dork with them But no, I've never seriously considered these kind of glasses, frankly I don't think I have enough guts to try to make them work! But it's good to hear that semi-rimless are not a no-no Edit: Now that I think about it, one of my acquaintances, actually quite a womanizer, got himself Weezer-style glasses before he moved for his postdoc in Munich He totally looked awesome in them! BTW, something I always wondered, do you think I would do better with contacts/no glasses? I think I can get lasik through my graduate insurance... On the other hand, I've worn glasses since I was perhaps 5 or 6 and to me my face looks strange when it's without glasses... Ooo, and one more edit, what do you guys think about my hair and face in general? Would shorter hair fit me better? Do you think a particular hairstyle fit me best? Yes, I realize that my hair got somewhat cropped in the photo.. but still, I think most of it is visible... Anyways, these are things I never really asked anyone and now that I see people actually reply to my thread it piqued my curiosity. Edited March 26, 2011 by ivalm
Eternal Sunshine Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I think you have a really cute face but I would cut your hair shorter. I can see you wearing kind of messy/gelled/spiky short. Also, take a pic with no glasses - it's hard to tell if this makes much difference to your looks... As for weezer style, not sure if you can pull then off. I always found that people either look super dorky or super cool with them
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Ooo, and one more edit, what do you guys think about my hair and face in general? Would shorter hair fit me better? Do you think a particular hairstyle fit me best? It's too long on looker's right/your left. It should be more layered there. Grow it out a little bit for more length on the bottom. I'm having difficulty explaining with words, so just...get it done like this. Then use a little product, but don't go short, especially if you do cool glasses.

Awesome! Actually, I've always had an issue in that on my right hand side my hair grows angled to the right while on my left hand side my hair grows down my face. This make my short hair sometimes look awkward. I have never tried to systematically use any kind of hair product though. I haven't actually cut my front hair for perhaps 6 months now.. not sure how much longer I can grow it.. hm.. let me may be look at some other photos of me ..

She'll cut your hair so that it can grow out better and look like the photo as it does (with occasional trims to shape it as it grows), and also train you on what product to use and how to use it.
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 P.S. You strike me as more of a UCSD/USD than a SDSU student. Am I right? If so, yeah... totally go for the Buddy Holly's.
Stung Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I could see you with a good pair of Buddy Holly's, too. Or if you stick with semi-rimless, get a pair with a bolder upper rim than the ones you linked to. Horn-rim, even only half-way, would suit you I think. I'd stay away from thin metallic or pale rims, they might look nebbishy. You're cute! Just need to get a little more styled.
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 You're cute! Just need to get a little more styled. Agreed!!

Totally UCSD Here is maybe a fuller photo of me from today http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2481/ivfuller.jpg But yeah.. they all seemed motion blurred since lighting is crappy and at 400 ISO the shutter speed was slow Edited March 26, 2011 by ivalm
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Totally UCSD I knew it!! Here is maybe a better photo of me from today http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2481/ivfuller.jpg Ooooh, much better hair! You just need a lil' style tweak by a stylist!

My pursuit of people to cut my hair has thus far focused on finding the cheapest place I can. Currently it's at $8. I've been told by another grad student that there is one for $7... So some lessons learned: 1) Semi-rimless is OK.. full on glasses can sometimes not be uberdorky 2) Hair that doesn't lie flat is better than hair that lies more flatly on the head... longish hair is good (because I know my shorter hair is not very good)... Btw, SG, where are you from? Edited March 26, 2011 by ivalm
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Btw, SG, where are you from? All over California.
Star Gazer Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Ivalm and Star Gazer should go on a date. Nooooooooo. Not because of ivalm but because I just won't go there On LS (anymore, again, whatever! haha!).
