irc333 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Okay, I never understood this. Either you are a smoker or non-smoker. There are no expections, agreed? Being a non-smoker (esp for health reasons), dating someone who smokes is a dealbreaker for me. But now I'm seeing these "grey" areas even when smoking. To me, a person saying "They smoke only when they drink" means they're a non-smoker trying to smoke when drinking? First of all, when I was young, I tried smokin' a cigarette, I turned green around the "gills" and almost puked. Never touched it again. But I heard if you "toughed it out" past that part, it becomes an acquired taste. But someone who smokes "occasionally", how can they handle takin' a drag occasionally? They don't turn green around the gills? Being a non-smoker, would it be easy to talk someone out of smoking occasionally? Another question would be "How OFTEN do you drink?" lol
sand26 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Actually you are wrong. They have found that different people have different tolerances to nicotine. Some people cannot smoke at all. Some become highly addicted. Some are occasional smokers. There is an entire chapter that talks about this in detail in the book "the tipping point", it is actually quite a good book, though I found some chapters more intriguing than others. check it out

oaks Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 To me, a person saying "They smoke only when they drink" means they're a non-smoker trying to smoke when drinking? Assuming they have a fairly regular social life that means to me that they are a smoker, but of course some people smoke more (like, as soon as they wake up). Why is it a problem for you? I mean, if any smoking is a deal breaker for you to date someone then why does it matter if they say they smoke only when they drink or if they say they have a 40-a-day habit? I think I could date someone who smokes occasionally (and I have done before) but if their "occasionally" was "every time we go out for drinks and dinner" then that might be too much for me. I only drink when I have a glass in my hand.
alexlakeman Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Recently I have opened up my dating prospect to occasional smokers... 1-2 we went drinking the first date, but they didn't feel the urge to pull a cig out... another we went drinking and she went from asking if I minded if she went outside for a cig, to just sitting outside all night and her smoking a few more, lol...umm, another I went out (I had dated her before she was smoking a year ago) and said she had taken up smoking, but she was constant.. drinking, she had a cig in her hand if it was outdoors.. In summary, I'll entertain someone who has a cig if she's drinking, might be a problem since I like to go out drinking, but I can always not call her for a second or third date if it's too much... Generally, I've noticed they are conciense about their breath and smell.
makelemonade1974 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I'm one of those "only smokes when drinks" people. I smoked lightly for years and then finally realized it was a habit and quit it with the help of Zyban. Nowadays I am REALLY aware of how addicting the things are, so I'm careful with them, but I do smoke sometimes when I drink - which is maybe once or twice a week in a social setting. When I wake up the next morning, I don't have the urge to go buy a pack of cigarettes. The way I look at it, if they actually are carrying a pack of cigarettes with them (meaning they paid money for a pack), then they are a smoker. If they just bum one when they drink, that's different. At least that's how I justify it to myself. Cigarettes are BAD news.
Nexus One Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 (edited) First of all, when I was young, I tried smokin' a cigarette, I turned green around the "gills" and almost puked. Never touched it again. I had a similar experience. When I was like eight I had a friend who already smoked. He one day gave me a cigarette and I took one breath from the thing and had to cough for a half an hour. At that age having to cough so much and so heavily made a deep impression on me. I never touched a cigarette again after that experience and I find it annoying when people around me smoke. Also when a woman smokes, it's the nr1 turn-off for men. That's not just my opinion, that's from multiple studies. Just a few days ago I was walking through the city and I saw a pretty girl that walked past me in front of me. At first my eyes followed her, then I saw she raised her hand and took a puff from her cigarette. INSTANT turn-off. I was immediately disinterested and noticed how strong the turn-off effect was of a woman that smokes. It makes women look ugly, can't describe it any other way. Why a woman would want to smoke when it destroys their health and turns off like 75% of the male population is beyond me. So if you as a woman smoke and have a hard time finding a boyfriend, try quit smoking, you'll expand your "fishing pool" by 75%. Sure there are guys who smoke themselves and don't mind it, but that's a minority. Edited March 20, 2011 by Nexus One
Stung Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I'm another person who occasionally smokes when drinking. I used to be a "light" smoker, about a pack a week, but I quit years ago. Now I only ever get the urge/craving for a cigarette if I've had a couple of stiff cocktails, or if I'm really, really angry and stressed out. I rarely drink more than one or two glasses of wine at a time, which is not enough to give me a craving for a cigarette. I'm pretty sure I've had about five cigarettes in the past two and a half years, maybe six, so I do consider myself a non-smoker, but if I had to fill something out and one choice was "smokes when drinking" I'd select that one in the interest of full-disclosure.
Torres Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I have to agree that I'd fall into that category. My friends were all big smokers growing up. When we went out for drinks they'd like to sit in the beer garden smoking. Maybe out of habit or peer pressure, I don't know I got a taste for a few cigarettes when drinking. Never really appealed to me to go out and buy cartons and cartons a week. Not bothered really during the week to be taking smoking breaks in work, I notice the smell too much. It's just a thing. I probably associate a few cigarettes with having a drink with my buddies but not at any other times. Same as how I love to order some hot wings when I'm at the bar with buddies but don't go out and eat them for lunch every day... The coughing and splutering thing doesn't really apply. When your young, people are given a cigarette and told to inhale deep, which leads to the turning green. I have a tolerance for a few but I'd die if I had 20 a day. Some people can be more sensitive to things than others.
Author irc333 Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 Yeah, thinking there was no such thing as an "in-between" smoker when it comes to smoking, I might consider this as an option..maybe. Recently I have opened up my dating prospect to occasional smokers... 1-2 we went drinking the first date, but they didn't feel the urge to pull a cig out... another we went drinking and she went from asking if I minded if she went outside for a cig, to just sitting outside all night and her smoking a few more, lol...umm, another I went out (I had dated her before she was smoking a year ago) and said she had taken up smoking, but she was constant.. drinking, she had a cig in her hand if it was outdoors.. sniffys Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 occasionally means when u are in a club, it means if there are drinks around..i'd think it means they dont have a stack of 6 pack beers in their fridge or bottles of wine/rum/gin/vodka lying around for daily consumption. smoking usually goes w/ drinking sometimes, i believe u get drunk fast while smoking.
