Okay, and not only from online dating sites...but in real life as well.

One I know personally as a high school friend, from his FB posts, he's probably one of the most cynical/ranting people I know. Of course, he shares his opininion on Christianity in a quite profame and blasphemic manner. (But hey, he's atheist, that's him and his business).

Actually, in proper context though, his writings do crack me up.

I just read two online dating profiles of women that, well, sounded like they cursed like a sailor or sewage worker in Boston Mass. lol

One even brags by saying, "My favorite words are the F-word (and something else)" she even has a photo of her flipping the camera the bird.

Another, must have a list of things that...go something like this....

1. If you're ...blah blah...F-OFF!!

2. If...you do this...F OFF

and finally, funny..."If you feel the need to critique my profile and advise me on how to make it better or more appealing , then F-OFF!!

Anyhow, is it common for atheists to act in such a abrasive, cynical, and unappealing manner?

Seems every atheist I run into these days, act in such a manner. Is this common?

Hmm funny you should say that. Friend of mine is an atheist and highly cynical and exceedingly tactless, there is no filter through what passes between his mind and his mouth. On the other hand I'm agnostic and nothing at all like that, but there is an important difference between atheism and agnosticism.

Running in the circles I do there are lots of self proclaimed atheist around. I've noticed cynicism and highly critical to be fairly common traits among those I know and talk to regularly. I think it goes with the territory of being on an extreme end of the belief spectrum rather than a specifically atheist thing. Those on the opposite side come across the same way to me (but with out the profanity and gestures).

Absolutely! We're all just like that!

I guess I must be the exception that proves the rule then. Because I'm an atheist, yet I'm generous, friendly and respectful most of the time.

And not that it was mentioned, but I've also been 100% faithful in every relationship I've been.

I want to say I agree, but I don't. Maybe you can say I am indecisive. However, I have come across many atheists like your friend. Me, myself, I am Agnostic. I share many of the same views with Atheists but I tend not to be so flamboyant about it, shrugs. This post alone proves how much I hate these labels - sigh.

Haha - many people say I have no filter between my mouth and mind .

You know what I say?

F$% them! ... lol I am kidding

You do realise that for example in Europe, MOST people are atheists, infact there are countrys were only a small minority believe in God. So would you say that all those people are the way you describe?

In Sweden 90% of all people are more or less atheists, I suppose all those people are cynical/ranting people? Give a break.

Not true.

How the question is phrased is important.

Please see stats.. they make sense to me.

Not sure what to say about the rudeness aspect within the dating world. Generally I find atheists to be horrid people - but I feel the same about some evangelicals. I avoid both.

I know a few atheists who are condescending and have that "I am holier than thou" attitude they claim most religious folk have. What I don't like is the fact that some, not all, but quite a few atheists like to consider all who don't share their beliefs to be dumb and ignorant. That's where I have a problem with them and anyone in general who has such a narrow minded view of the world. I believe in God, you don't, and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want, but no one is entitled to feel lower than anyone else because of those differences.

I don't know. I'm an atheist, do you think I'm rude, condescending, abrasive, and unappealing?

I'm an atheist who's met a lot of other atheists who enjoy activism. They'll tell you that getting a group of atheists to do anything or agree on anything is like herding cats. The only thing they have in common is their lack of religious beliefs, and their personalities, political beliefs, and backgrounds are all over the map.

Alright, Only 23% in Sweden have a belief in God. Most people in europe are not Christians, atleast among people under 30.

There was a bit more to it than that mate! This study shows that MANY MANY people believe in a spirit of force. Apparently, like loads of people do. Atheists try and make out like they are atheists too.. and they are not. They often are being honest in that they don't know but are trying to live well.

I listen to that.

Atheists, especially 'internet atheists' are generally white middle classed people who are big heads and have no problem judging and bothering those who have a faith because they think they are more intelligent and brilliant.

As an atheist reading this, I think "pot, kettle"

I wouldn't say more intelligent. But more logical, I go by facts and by Common sense.

Whats the difference between believing God and believing in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny?

That's exactly the way I look at it.

If you can balance thinking God, Santa and The Easter Bunny are the same then yeah.. carry on. To me that is a robotic silly question.

Anyhow, this has nothing to do with the what the OP has said. I don't want to disrupt the thread any further. No point.

So, yeah, I agree totally with the observations made by the OP and then some. I will use this as ample opportunity see who supports such views here mainly so I can block them. :)

Well, as a Christian, I guess you'll let God be our judge and stop trying to do His work for Him.

Would you consider this particular prejudice of yours an intelligent or ignorant trait?

I was refraining to post earlier about my impressions of catholics on the dating sites I've met (because quite frankly, my entire family is catholic, and they're nothing like them - which leads me to believe there is still quite a large ratio of terrible to nice people on dating sites) were quite racist. Comments like that only seem to backup my initial impressions.

Some of the ladies I've met were quite hypocritical too - stating boldly in their ads that they wouldn't date an atheist but always initiating conversations with me because I had a fair skin, am naturally blonde and have light blue eyes. They would always tell me in one way or another why I was "her type".

Having friends from nearly all belief systems enlightened me though. Most people in the real world will be nice and understanding to you if they like your personality, no matter what you chose to believe. You just can't let the fanatics (even atheists can be fanatics!) stain your opinion of that particular group. And since there seems to be a lot of bitter people on dating sites, those tend to be even more fanatical than your average obnoxious person.

I find threads like this funny!

It's stating "If you're not with me, you're dirt". It puts the burden of proof on atheists which is too funny since atheists don't need to prove anything to anyone. So why not play into it, in the worst possible way since we're already guilty? :bunny:

Edit - Oops, forgot. ****, ****, ****!

As much fun as this is, I believe it's time to turn a new leaf. I'm giving up my abrasive, offensive, atheist ways and joining the Westboro Baptist Church. They seem like a nice, quiet, inoffensive bunch. ;)

Because as someone said earlier, it's like herding cats. The only thing in common we have is that we do not fit with others. And that doesn't mean we fit together either.

I find myself a few years too old to have fun mocking and angering people over the internet, even if they're kind of asking for it.

How would playing into exactly what the OP states, be angering the OP? If anything, it's a reinforcement of his opinion which should make him happy that he's got it right!

The problem with dogma threads is that people don't respect others opinions but want to push their ideas as the truth.

If someone believes in God then why attack them and say things like, "you must also believe in Santa Claus and the easter bunny too".

If someone doesn't believe in God then that doesn't make them all cynical by association.

Religious viewpoints are highly personal so why make personal attacks against each other?

"Beliefs" are generally a non-issue for me. They are only an issue to those who have them and are uncomfortable with those who don't. Some people consider me an atheist but I don't because that would be giving their beliefs more power than they rate. I consider myself "unafflicted" by the mixture of mental illness and primitive assumption people call religion. But becoming unafflicted has been a hard won battle that has taken much deep work over a long time. There's no way to escape having the insanity foisted upon you when you're least able to separate what is real and good from what's false and bad. But having come to a place free from belief I found nothing at all to be cynical about. I do however agree that places which draw self-styled atheists often seem to attract arrogant and dismissive types who are not very sociable.

Posted

My friend and I were actually talking about this a couple of hours ago. Most of the atheists I know are highly cynical. Perhaps they are not necessarily mean or bad people at all, but they do tend to be quite cynical and are generally not the most positive people. My friend noted that they are a lot more afraid of death - which makes sense. I'm sure not all atheists fear death, but, from my experience, most do, and it's painfully evident once they're on their death bed. My advice dating-wise is not to date somebody who is outside of your deeply-held philosophical views. This does not mean that you must not date a Republican if you're a Democrat (unless politics is uber important to you), but it does mean that if you're a Catholic, dating an atheist should be out of the question, or if you're an atheist, don't date a conservative Mormon. Sure, love knows no boundaries, but instead of complaining about one group of people - lets just leave them be. Sure, the atheists are generally cynical and hard to be with for a person like me - but that's fine, I won't date them, nor complain about them.
