What are some realistic expectations when being involved with someone who is bipolar? I also understand there are different forms of bipolar.

However, how do you handle it when the persons moods get the best of you? I understand reading about it, learning the different things that go on or may not go on, but sometimes its hard to not take things so personally when involved with a person with this disorder.

Any suggestions on things to try? Ignore it when the moods flare up? I think maybe acknowledging it when it happens is a start, but I also think people can lose themselves if they get overly involved as well. not looking to be the "caretaker". So whats the best way to handle things?

Is this person medicated and in therapy?

No, even though the suggestion has been made to them by numerous people, numerous times.

I suggest you leave her. She isn't taking care of herself and until she takes responsibility, there is nothing you can do.

This sounds harsh, but if I told you the war stories of my past and that of my bipolar friends, you'd run for the hills. Multiple hospitalizations, nasty fights, suicide attempts, drug overdose, infidelity, police coming to the door, lost jobs, destroyed possessions, etc.

It's not pretty although us bipolar folk are often sweethearts when we are in remission.

This is a heartbreaking situation b/c part of the illness is resisting treatment. But a lot of bipolars take their meds and lead relatively normal lives. The ones who don't are in for a lifetime of pain.
