I've been out with this guy a few times and I really really like him. I think he's attractive (not exceptionally so - but attractive), he and I see things in a very similar way, he's kind, compassionate and just lovely.

Since I'm not really over my ex, I've had to tell him that I can't see him like that anymore, but we are still friends and talk quite a bit. The thing is - I don't like kissing him. He just doesn't smell right to me - I know that sounds weird. He doesn't smell bad or anything, I'm just not turned on by the way he smells. Maybe this can be remedied with cologne or something?

Anyway, do ya'll believe in this "chemistry" thing - like it's either there or it isn't? My ex smelled like heaven - totally different situation than with this guy. But my ex was a total a s s to me. This guy is nice.

Thoughts? Is he not the one for me because he doesn't smell right?

Correct.

(1) You shouldn't have to settle.

(2) This will always be on your mind as long as you're seeing him. And it's always going to bother you.

(3) You're not over your ex. You've associated his scent with dating and relationships. It'll take time, but I'm sure you'll eventually get over it.

(4) See number 1.

If women started wearing Bacon scented perfume then I'd say yes.

But for now, not really.

The smell of a girl's hair is really important and can be a huge turn on for me. Moreso than perfume.

I don't know if I get "turned on" by a good smelling woman, what I did notice though, and I'm suspecting the perfume industry is aware of this, is that I seem to get high from certain perfumes.

Call me nuts, but I could swear they're putting something like opium in certain perfumes. A former female colleague of mine used to wear a certain perfume that made me feel high whenever she entered the space I was in. It made me very relaxed. And it happened every time without fail. I wasn't attracted to her though, but I appreciated the perfume she used due to its "effects".

The reason I'm suspecting opium in perfumes is that I once had the chance to smell incense sticks with opium in them and they pretty much had the exact same effect.

I can appreciate a good perfume though, but does it make a woman more attractive? I don't know.

I hadn't realised how important this was until I met someone who smelled really really good compared to someone who I'd spent too long with who didn't smell so good. I know that a diet strong in certain food items, medicines and toiletries impact upon someone's smell and therefore a change in those areas can improve things somewhat, but nonetheless, there will be other factors that cannot be changed.

Therefore, in my opinion and experience, if he doesn't smell right then it's a dealbreaker. You need to ask yourself how much time you can hang around him, particularly when you get 'up close and personal' and become bathed in his scent. I suggest leaving him to find someone who will go weak at the knees from how he smells and find someone else whose scent makes you swoon.

Yes, I am definitely turned on by how someone smells. You're better off leaving the guy whose smell you don't like alone.

There have been studies done that show people are attracted to those whose MHC (major histocompatibility complex) is different from their own. MHC is present in pheromones and saliva, meaning that you can smell and taste it. You're more likely to be repelled by someone whose MHC is similar to yours--that is, if you're not on the Pill/pregnant.

sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound... all five senses can be sources of attraction. Smell is very much primitive and almost feral rawr!!!

I wrote a post on my blog a little while ago that pretty much says that our "animal" side is something that's often ignored. Love and sex are as primal as it gets. We have pheromones that serve that exact purpose, so I'd definitely say smell can be a turn on. It's all science.

On a non-scientific level, when my wife is fresh out of the shower, I can't be held responsible for what I do to her :lmao: That mix of smell good soaps and lotions and her natural body chemistry is pure, raw, sexy.

I am completely enslaved by scent. I believe that a person's aroma is one of the main contributors to how attracted I am to them, even on a subconscious level.

I had a very sick, tumultuous, sexually obsessive relationship with a man in a far away land, a long time ago. It was hard for me to extricate myself from that, but I did. Probably a year later, I was walking down the street in San Francisco when I suddenly smelled him. It was a man walking past me in the opposite direction. He smelled just like my ex. I stopped in my tracks and turned to watch him; really, I practically followed him. Just because of his scent.

Yep on first dates I've felt totally repulsed by a guys smell, even when they dont smell bad!!! A scent i'm not attracted to makes me not want to touch or be near them. It's a chemistry thing I think as all guys I want close to me smell fantastic to me!

I agree with the guy who said a girl's hair is a turn on.

It really is. When you cuddle her and just rest your nose on her head and she smells beautiful. :)

If a girl's hair smells nice it goes a long way to impressing me.

Yeah don't settle....

My ex wore a really really nice cologne, i loved it.. but i also loved his 'own' scent.

You know, the smell of his t shirt that he left at my place or after work when he was a bit sweaty i still thought he smellt amazing. It's like my nose was telling me we were compatible physically.

mmmm...

:D:) I love this...it sounds like me and my ex. Unfortunatly, smell isn't everything to a relationship....<sigh>

I had a VERY similar experience, just last week...in San Francisco! I actually followed him into a gallery. Wonder if it's the same guy...

I like the way women smell when they're naked and in my bed.

But seriously, MHC. I posted about this before. It's a biological response. When we detect someone with compatible MHC, either smell or taste (like when you kiss), it triggers attraction.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with if the person is nice or a jerk/bitch.

Even when my boyfriend has been working for hours and is covered in sweat and feels like he's at his worse, I am completely turned on with how he smells and looks. It's then that I feel that he's his most attractive and our chemistry is at it's highest, because it's all him and not his cologne or shampoo or body wash or anything else. Color me crazy, but it's just how I am. I don't know if everybody is like this with someone that they are crazy about, but I feel that if you need cologne or something else to boost the chemistry for you and this new dude, then it's just not going to work. What if you guys wake up one morning (or every morning), he leans in for a kiss, and you're reminded of his natural odor and aren't turned on by his kiss again? You just going to spray him with some cologne on the bedside table and hope for the best? This guy seems like he'd be a good friend for you, but boyfriend? Probably not. Chemistry is a must and you can't force it.

I don't like the way my roommate smells. Does that mean we have incompatible MHC? He doesn't smell... unhygienic, he just has a distinct scent... I mean I'm laughing as I write this, because I've never quite experienced anything like it before, and it sounds like such a strange thing to say, "he has a distinct scent". But really, it's not his breath or his clothes or anything artificial, it's just him. It's like he sleeps in a bed of mothballs and old iron.

****, I wonder what I smell like. Aside from vetiver and pink pepper and whatever the **** else is in my cologne. I don't trust natural smell. A friend of mine swears up and down about the benefits of natural living and pheromones and he walks around all day smelling like a gym sock. I don't buy it. But he's in a happy relationship with a flower child, so I guess he chose the right niche. I wonder if it's MHC or just his incredible naturist ego.

Most guys I have dated recently didn't turn me on or off with their smell. They just smelled OK.

But what started my 4 year long obsessive crush with my boss was his smell. He is short, 10 years older and very average looking guy. But whenever I was close enough to him to smell him, I had to restrain myself not to rip his clothes off. It was literally his smell that caused the strong chemistry. It helped that he was a freaking genius too.

I'm rubbing my body all over my computer monitor right now, in hopes that some of the LS ladies that click on this thread will fall in love with me.

Most definitely pheromones. Like I said, at our core we're animals!

i dated a girl who i thought was pretty cute but ended up not calling her back cos something about the way she smelled put me off...on the other hand, i didn't think this other girl was all that when i first saw her, but we went out for a couple dates anyway, made out and then spent a few months together. go figure.
