I hope that link works.

The study basically makes the very logical assertion that there are 3 basic components to what makes a man attractive.

1. Social Status - Ability to provide for children.

2. Physical Appearance and bravery - Ability to protect her and any offspring.

3. Parenting skill - Ability to teach and nurture children

Bound up in all of this is the key point of willingness to do these things for her. Which makes sense... what point is a good looking rich guy if he won't help in raising any children she may have with him.

I should note that these studies were primarily done in non-western countries and are a bit older. Those done more recently in western countries seem to point to a bit of behavioral adaption to artificial systems such as child support and welfare.

I read a study that claims MHC, major histocompatibility complex, plays a large role. It control our immune system. Something about being attracted to people that have have a certain type of MHC, that combined with our own, will produce offspring that supposedly have stronger immunity to diseases.

And, it shows that once pregnant, the type of MHC that a woman is attracted to changes, to something that's similar to her own MHC. The theory is that it'll make the woman want to stay with family, for protection.

But, this creates a problem, since many birth control pills make the woman's body think she's pregnant. So women that are on the pill end up becoming attracted to men with MHC profile close to her own. And as soon as she gets off the pill, attraction goes away.

The thing that skews the data is for guys who don't want children, and women who don't want children. I've stated before that scientists seem to disregard these people, despite them making up a large minority of the population.
