xpaperxcutx Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Out of curiousity I decided to join POF. Having done the whole online dating of OKC previously, I really wasn't expecting much, and I was right. While I may love the simple platform of POF, I don't particularly like alot of the men on here. To me, they all look like an alternate version of the cast members of Jersey Shore- they're either too muscular, too tan, or way too cocky looking in their pictures. Most of their About Me are unoriginal and can be easily summarized into three perfect letters: GTL ( gym, tan and laundry). I'm usually not particularly hard to please or picky for that matter, but it kind of upsets me that most of the men on there aren't dateable. In fact, half of the men who has contacted me so far had nothing better to say except comment on my picture.

sb129 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 OMG those guys get their eyebrows waxed. That is so wrong.
Author xpaperxcutx Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 OMG those guys get their eyebrows waxed. That is so wrong. OMG I hadn't noticed? Maybe it's because I'm already turned off by pictures of their abs ( I think there is still a thing called modesty on the interweb? ) that I don't really want to analyze their facial features.

Intricategirl Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 My thoughts on POF and OKC... It's free. There's no investment whatsoever. Date or no date, sex or no sex, relationship or no relationship- they didn't have to make any sort of investment at all. I heard one guy I met from there say, "I hate paying full price for anything" in reference to a dresser. But I think he also applies it to relationships. Put in nothing, get whatever you can, if it doesn't work out, it didn't cost anything. Does it apply across the board? Almost certainly not. But I just joined EH and it's a different class of men. I don't know if they are better yet, they may have a different group flaw and will absolutely have their own personal flaws. But they actually seem to be taking it seriously.
january2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Before I found LS, I used to read the PoF forums and there were only a few lone voices who I thought seemed 'sensible' and 'on the ball'. Most seemed highly focused on sex and no matter what the conversation would take the opportunity to flirt and derail threads with sex talk. Many posts were also very poorly written and too laden with textspeak and spelling errors. Didn't register on the main dating site because I was put off by what I read on the forums and glancing through the profiles, I get the same impression as you, xpaperxcutx, regarding the the guys on there and we're not even in the same country! I think the slightly geekier guys on OKC are more compatible with me.
irc333 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 OKC, for some reason, everytime I do a search, I see nothing but obese women, not sure why it's sorting with just overweight women, but for some reason it does, so when I click on their profile, and I see the listing of women NEXT to their profile in my area, I see thinner women, so I click on those to the right, to find the women I'm interested in. Even MORE interesting, if you try to do a search on "body type", let's say, filter out just the thin women, you have PAY EXTRA to do that. So NOW it makes sense, by sorting by overweight women, it prompts the user to try to sort by thin or average woman and the site attempts to UPSELL the user to be able to search by the DESIRED body types. Pretty sneaky. LOL Before I found LS, I used to read the PoF forums and there were only a few lone voices who I thought seemed 'sensible' and 'on the ball'. irc333 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I did hear that POF is loaded with married people in the guise of single people. I don't like paid dating sites, because most of the women there paid subscribers either, so you're wasting your money contacting them.

Until you meet someone, you've only their word to rely on regarding how recent their pictures are and people can have skewed perceptions about their body type - some are delusional whereas others are just being dishonest to increase their appeal and likelihood of being contacted/replied to. It's a minefield. But then we know that already!

You're right, there's no investment on a free site, except the time it takes to make a profile and upload some pictures, and a lot of women on POF don't even bother with the profile. I don't know about the guys, probably pretty similar I assume. As for the difference between OKC and POF, it's precisely because OKC requires more of an investment of time in creating a profile that the people there are clearly better. The questions, the features, the detailed profile sections... I'm sure it weeds out a lot of people who don't take it seriously. I'm not saying OKC is the classiest place in the world, but it's High Tea at Buckingham Palace compared to POF. Edited February 23, 2011 by Leeway Harris clarity

I'm not saying OKC is the classiest place in the world, but it's High Tea at Buckingham Palace compared to POF. It's been a while since I searched for a woman on POF, but I imagine so. Agreed. I'm giving the paid sites a shot. At EH you've got to jump through a ridiculous number of hoops, so we'll see how that goes.
irc333 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Yeah, I get a kick out of those trying to hide their obesity behind a pet, child, or trying to be cute by poking their head out from behind a "peek-a-boo" manner from behind a tree/doorway. Or the famous "I'll crop this photo to my shoulders, so that I may appear thin. Another one is that throws me off, I used to see if a person just has a head shot, and if they have a double chin, that I knew what the rest of their body would look like. Not such the case, there are some people with non-double chins that are heavy set as well, throws me off. lol Marketing is where it's at. They've got to make their money somehow. I have never so much as gotten a reply from women on POF but on OKC I at least get some replies. OKC just feels like it's more quality.

I shouldn't laugh really, we all have our issues and I guess those women are putting themselves out there and doing their best with what nature gave them. Most of the guys I've come across don't seem to be so tricksy with their photos. Anyway, PoF - sleazy, yes.
Ay Diesel T Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I see your future boyfriend in one of these guys: http://tinyurl.com/6edpem6 The middle one Papercut. You can't escape your destiny. Hahaha bro I'm dying.
Mme. Chaucer Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I was on POF and Match AND OKC at the same time. There were a great deal of crossover people. I did meet nice guys via POF - not particularly sleazy ones.
Sanman Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The only good thing I can say about POF is that there are so many sleazy people on there that I have scored a couple of dates due to being the only non-sleazy person that a few women met. Though that clearly isn't enough to start a relationship.

My competition is 40, never married, no kids, ripped, posing shirtless, owns landscaping company, half a bag of cement for brains. I can't compete with that. LOL!
oaks Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Out of curiousity I decided to join POF. I've just done the same. My eyes are hurting. Tiny thumbnails, badly resized.

NYCGirly Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I joined out of curiosity myself about 2 weeks ago...NEVER AGAIN! I deleted my profile after a week. That site is pure trash. Nothing but guido juiceheads and thugs. Not for me. A lot of mass messages without any references to my profile. A lot of one liners. Nothing of substance. If you are looking for a free site, you're better off with OKC.

I think I might delete before the end of the week.
