cmh2002 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Okay so I should probably know this since she is my 3rd child, but all of my kids are soo different. my youngest is starting to show more signs of what I think is her readiness to potty train, the thing is I don't know how to approach it with her. She won't pee or poop if we are in the room with her. She will be 3yr old at the end of April and has just recently started to take off her diaper mostly after she pees and sometimes before it happens and the same with the poop. Over the weekend while I was gone and my husband was home with her she went to the bathroom and when he checked on her she was upset cause she needed toilet paper(her new thing within the last week or so is to climb up on the toilet naked and try to go potty then wipe) so he got her some and glanced in the toilet and she had pooped in there. Saturday she had peed in the toilet as well right before her bath that evening. The last 2 nights she wakes up dry and then takes off her diaper and knocks on the door and if we don't answer fast enough pees on the floor. This morning she knocked at her usual time (6:30am) and was naked so I asked if she needed to use the potty and she said yes so I took her to the upstairs bathroom to use it. She sat there for about 5 mins and nothing, I went to her room and picked up her diaper and again it was dry.. We came downstairs and 5 mins later shes in the bathroom down here on the toilet but had already peed in her pull up. Do I just keep following her lead or should I do the bathroom ever 45mins -1hr and underwear or what? My son didn't potty train until he was 6 1/2 due to some issues he had to have surgery and then boom he was trained almost overnight once he healed from surgery. My daughter who is almost 7 trained about 1 month before she turned 3.she just woke up 1 day and wanted nothing to do with diapers. I would love to be done with diapers after changing them for almost 9yrs straight but I don't want to push her to much to where she regresses.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. And please no rude comments about my son not training till he was 6 1/2 yrs old it was out of his and my control since the dr.s took forever to listen when I would say something wasn't right and to finally get a referal.
sb129 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 My daughter is a bit young, but a friend has had success with using a reward system for toilet training. She gave her son one marshmallow (the teeny weeny ones) for a wee on the toilet, and two for a poo. Worked really well for him, he is fully toilet trained and isn't quite three. If your daughter is nearly three she should be able to understand the deal. its not a bribe- think of it as an "incentive"...
bentnotbroken Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I used the reward system to, at my mom's suggestion and it worked well.
Author cmh2002 Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 thanks for the help.I know were not done but yesterday she didn't have a single accident. We haven't had to change a poop in 3 days now and no pee in 1 1/2 days.I am just trying to let her lead the way and Im sure there will be accidents. Im most nervous about I think about taking her out somewhere and having an accident. She will be 3 at the end of April but her vocabulary is behind, tho catching up. I am not sure she will know to tell me if she has to go since most of the time here she just gets up from what she is doing and goes to the bathroom without telling me until after. Do kids go to the bathroom all the time when first starting out or could she not be quite ready? She is constantly in there it seems. Oh and I do reward her with a fruit snack when she poops in the potty. Nothing for pee maybe I should tho?
Art_Critic Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I used the reward system to, at my mom's suggestion and it worked well. Agree.. My son is turning 3 in a couple of weeks, he has been poop trained for about 2 months now and mostly pee trained but for the pee it only works if if he has underwear on, if he has a diaper on he pees in the diaper,. We used a dollar toy grab bag.. just filled up a dark bag with toys under 5.00.. mostly around a dollar and he got to pick one out each time there was a sucess. We had to stop it though as it was hard to keep filled with toys that were new.. he got like 15 hotwheels in 4 days.. We still use the reward but switched it to sweets, chocolate or yogurt..hahaha That is getting ready to stop in a few days.. the candy will just run out.. The reward deal worked in about 2-3 days for us and the pee took about 2 weeks and even now with the pee he will have accidents in his underwear.. Good luck We also made sure all the toilets in the house have the attached baby seats and stools so he could go anytime he wants.. which he does.. The wet wipes that Huggies makes are great for cleanup too.. flushable

I am gonna get the flushable wipes for her probably tomorrow so were not going thru 1 roll of toilet paper a day for a family of 5 using the toilet lol. She had no accidents today so I am hoping this is a great sign she is ready to go atleast during the day.
