Heard about ex through a friend -- what does it mean?

For those of you who don't know my story, I'll wrap it up briefly: I dated my ex for 2.5 years, he started having feelings for someone else so he broke up with me (while we still lived together), we did the back and forth thing at the beginning of January, and he finally moved out last week. When we talked before he moved out, the plan was for us to make it a clean break for a month and then reassess where we both were at in our lives and our feelings, see if he had figured his situation out and if I had moved on.

It's been a week of NC (aside from a few logistical conversations of dropping off mail and whatnot), but I just heard from his close friend that he wants to have everything figure out by spring break (beginning of March) and that he thinks that us not spending time together might make us drift apart. I don't understand the logic behind either of these statements.

1) How can you set a deadline for when you're going to have a grasp on your feelings when this has been going on for months and you're still confused? This isn't buying a car, these are emotions, and obviously he's far more inept when it comes to dealing with emotions than I ever thought.

2) How can we drift apart after 2.5 years when it's only been a week of NC? I guess I was hoping that not talking or interacting would strengthen his feelings, but maybe I was wrong. And obviously this is all a game of he said she said since my friend wasn't entirely sure where he was coming from, but she just said he said he thought if we spent too much time not talking or seeing each other that we might drift apart.

Any help with interpreting this? How should I act? I'm so tempted to break NC and contact him, but I don't know if it's worth it this early.
