seren Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Hi all, first time in this forum, I think. I have Systemic Lupus, along with a whole raft of joint and muscle problems. I recently spoke to my chirporactor and he said that we don't use nearly enough of our muscles as they are meant to be used and as a result they shorten and tighten up, causing stiffness and in my case, spasms. One of the symptoms I experience is side and chest wall muscle spasms, dammed scary!! I also have insomnia at the moment so posting everywhere on LS. Does anyone have any ideas for gentle muscle stretching that wont be too demanding? I have looked at yoga but to be honest, getting down to the floor is a pain most days!! getting up a whole new ball game. I am concerned that the general stiffness is getting worse and want to do all I can to help my body cope with this awful disease. I am aware that there a few of us on LS who have or know someone who has Lupus and wondered if anyone has any hints or tips for coping, other than the meds. I suppose those with arthritis and general muscle and joint problems would benefit too. I also have a herniated disc at the moment so any exercise needs to be gentle.
tman666 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Wow, it sounds like a pretty bad disease! While I cannot personally relate, I can tell you that the body takes time to adapt to new stimuli. As much as it may hurt now, if you're doctors/chiropractor have cleared you for activities such as yoga, stretching, light aerobic exercise, you should be doing your best to do so. Pushing yourself might be painful at first, but as you improve, it should become less of a battle. You might consider (if you have plenty of disposable income) hiring a good trainer to help motivate you, guide you through your improvements, and help keep you safe. Make sure that if you go this route, however, that you make sure that they have good credentials and have experience working with people that may require special programs and extra assistance.
Wink Tobasco Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I think moving in a swimming pool would provide the most gentle workout.
