You feel that you are missing out on important events in your partners life. You feel lonely and left out. At least I did. For a year we talked about starting it (it's been a year apart so far). Now we have finally started. We write for ourselves, for each other and for anyone interested in how we make it work. I really recommend sharing a project like this together with your partner. My boyfriend's originally from the UK too and we now reside in the US, in different states. Pictures, planning the next visit, and leaving physical reminders of each other are what get us through. The hardest part is not having them there on a day to day basis, for the good and the bad. But, being in an LDR has taught me never to take anything for granted and that our love is real. I wouldn't be going through this for anyone else, but he's so worth it.
