I've been trying to eat extremely nutritious and healthy, but being on a vegetarian diet meant that I had to forego meat and stick to tofu for my protein. Overall, my diet consists fresh veggies, legumes, tofu, and brown rice/ wheat bread. Latelyn I've been eating alot of brown rice for lunch, it's always half a cup ( = 150 calories) and I'll throw in two servings of veggies. Sometimes I'll have a fruit 1-2 hours later.

Am I eating too much carbs? I'm a little carb conscious even though I know eating more carbs helps me run for an hour everyday. However, how much carbs is too much carbs? I try to keep my carbs limited to the mornings and afternoon so I'll burn off the calories when I hit the treadmill.

I have always eaten as low carb as i possibly could. I had an eating disorder (binge eating) when I was in high school and I would do atkins or some low carb diet, and I would be able to drop a ton of weight. But I would restrict SO much that I could not longer take it and woul "fall off" and gain all the weight back.

I finally lost the weight about 6 years later and kept it off because I integrated so healthy carbs such as fruits and veggies. Sometimes I will eat sweets (to prevent binging) but it will NEVER be something that I would binge on and I immediately put gum in my mouth or leave the area that the food was in to prevent going overboard. I would say I eat about 50-60 carbs per day. That's even a pretty low amount in the grand scheme of things. I WILL gain weight back if I up carbs. They make me retain water and I get "puffy." It's like my body can't process them correctly.

Anyway, I think you are doing great, brown rice does have a lot of carbs so portion control is a MUST, if you are trying to control carbs. Just limit your portion, if you eat like a huge bowl of brown rice there pretty much is no point. Do you use a measuring cup? That's what I do and it works!

L_B, it's surprising to hear you used to have an ED, I'm currently in recovery from Bulimia so I understand the urges to binge. I've been trying to separate my meals into small portions so they won't prompt a trigger, and I've been trying to follow it adamantly without being too restrictive. My cheat food is usually ice cream or Milhojas ( Spanish Napoleon pastry).

My body is like yours as well, I can't process carb too well or else I get bloated too. I try to keep my carbs limited to the mornings, and if I eat too much I make sure I burn it off before bedtime.

The whole fear of carbs thing is a class example of throwing out the baby with the bath-water. It's definitely a good idea to stay away from junk carbs such as found in donuts, cookies, white flour and the like. But there is no reason to avoid whole grains, beans, legumes, vegetables or fruit -- all carbs that are good for you.

I make sure I am eating enough protein first (roughly 1.4 grams per pound of bodyweight), then fat (roughly .35 grams per pound of bodyweight) and then I fill in with carbs to meet my caloric needs. So for me, this looks like:

165g protein = 660 calories

44g fat = 396 calories

150g carbs = 600 calories

You'll notice that this ends up being close to the 40/40/20 split recommended by South Beach and other "diets."

You can tweak those numbers to meet your requirements and goals.

I tried every diet out there. Trust me you really gotta watch your carbs making it MINIMAL. Overall make sure you burn just as much as you consumed during the day. Make sure if you are only gonna be in gym for little time, then watch your food intake that day.

Also, ensure that if youa re tryign to lsoe weight you do ti over 6 to 7 months using same diet. I did that and i lost 30 pounds in the most healthy way. I eat lots of protein vegies and 2 fruits per day, and cheeze etc. Milk every second day BUT no CARBS. Only one cheat meal a week. And i do cheat with small chocolate pieces every second day due to my addiction but its minimal 97% black choolate.

Good luck

My doctor told me to stay away from carbs that are white. White breads, white rice, white potatoes, cake etc. It's overly processed and converts right to sugar then fat in your system without your body expending much energy digesting it. Whole wheat etc are good for you with all the fiber.

Yeah, most people see how thin I am and could never imagine that I had binge eating disorder. I never purged thank goodness. Another tip is to not let yourself get too hungry. I usually end up eating a lot more because I am a fast eater, so my brain doesn't register that I am full. I really try to stop eating the second I feel full. If I have left over food I immediately throw it away. Left overs are evil, if I have food left on my plate at a restaurant I NEVER take it home.

My theory is that binging messes up your digestive tract and screws with your metabolism because it doesn't know what to do with the amount of food that is put into your body. So even though we don't binge anymore, the digestive tract is still struggling to re-regulate itself and it can't process carbs as quickly as others can. EAting disorders are like the worst addiction you can have because you have to eat food, you don't have to drink alcohol, do drugs, gamble, ect.
