What would girls think if a guy they knew started calling them by their male-equivalent names? Like, calling a girl named Jacqueline "Jack," or Christina "Chris," or Samantha "Sam"?

Would they find it cute, insulting or not care at all?

That's not calling them their male-equivalent name, it's calling them by their shortened name.

In my experience, some people (male and female) can get quite sensitive to what they are called, whether it's people using dimunitive versions of their name or a nickname.

Your best best is to ask the individual. If she introduces herself as "Jack" and you know her name is "Jacqueline", use "Jack."

Some people don't mind if you ask if you can refer to them using the diminutive but others might be slightly peeved by your asking. Again, individual preferences come into play.

I've got a double-southern name with the first name similar to a male name, so I don't think it's unusual to be called it. Mostly, it's really, really close friends who use it, otherwise, it's my full D/S name that gets used, or with the kids, the nickname they gave me.

however, I do find it VERY insulting if someone decides to use it as an endearment and they either just met me or is someone really creepy ...

I tried calling my ex-girlfriend by her shortened name, which happened to be a male name. Man, it wasn't pretty.

Gosh, my first impression of this was: Quank's into D/s!?!?!?:eek::eek:

It took me a full 30 seconds of staring to realize you meant double-southern by D/S.

Silly me. :laugh::lmao::love:

There isn't really a male-equivalent to my name (shortening-wise) but I hate it when people I don't know start shortening my name and trying to call me by a nickname. I'll correct them the first time; I don't get "angry" about it once (most people are just trying to be friendly), but I do bristle internally because I just don't like it. If, after I've politely corrected them, they persist, I'd be put off for sure.

Really, you should call people by whatever it is they want to be called.

I've a male-equivalent that I sort-of like, but admittedly none of the guys who were with me used it. Platonic male friends used it lots, though.

I think it would go over especially well if you called Stephanie Steven, and Laura Lawrence. They'd find it real hawt.

That struck me, too. Sam is not a male-equivalent for Samantha, it is a nickname for both Samantha and Samuel. Ditto Chris for Christopher and Christina, etc.

Absolutely. If a woman introduces herself to you as something, call her that. Once you know her better and have a certain level of cozy familiarity, ask her playfully how she feels about <insert nickname here>. If you're going to start making up nicknames for her, it might be best to wait until it's an intimate pillow-talk moment, and then pay attention to her reaction to it. I had one boyfriend call me Sweet Turnip and I thought it was adorable because it was quirky and born out of an inside joke between us, but if he had started calling me that right off the bat I would have thought he was obnoxious.

I already go by a short version of my name, in casual settings. If someone wanted to shorten it further, they would have to just call me by my initial. :o

I quite like it...I dunno why. Maybe its because I feel like less of a girly girl. I wish I was called Georgina or something, so it could be shortened to George or G.

How cool would it be to be called a G :D

In case you didn't realize, this is an absolutely terrible idea. You must have aspbergers (spelling!) no insult intended.

haha Good one Dispatched!

Good topic OP and some interesting responses!

Oddly (although I am female) I carry a male Name. Which has caused much controversy in my family. My Mom had 5 boys and one girl and she couldn't stop to give the one girl a girls name!! Needless to say I am cool with it now but surely not when I was growing up!

I now enjoy it as its unique and often when I am first introduced I get a quizzical conversation going. The only uneasy part is when guys converse and basically say it would be weird to whisper a guys name in my ear, So I tell em to shout it and make sure its my name *grin*.
