lostdad Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Hello, My wife and I recently separated. Is there any child support advantage to shooting for 50/50 custody? Or would I pay the same amount of child support? Thanks in advance.
sally4sara Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Most often, child support is determined by income disparity first and then adjusted by how shared the parenting could be. It varies some state to state and you can find child support calculators online for each state. How shared the parenting can be also varies with age. A kid not in school could be managed with a 50/50 split, but once they are in school - unless you two live close to the kids school, that 50/50 split gets to be more of a hassle to the kids than the parents. Don't get bogged down with the 3 days on one week and 4 the next unless you two are living near enough to each other. On a personal note, your wife has fallen out of love with you and moving out of the family home- due to this the kids have to go too? Why? This plays into what I said about school age kids. The bus stop is near the family home, the school they go to is determined by what school district the family home is located in. If you're to stay in the family home and the kids are of the age to go to school, why are you not going for primary custody so that their schedule is not turned upside down on them? You're not just a father so long as your wife loves you. You're a father for life.

If your going to have your child half of the time then the child support will be less or nonexistent if you both make about the same money. You will also want to live close to your ex to ensure half the time visitation.
Author lostdad Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks for the advice. Currently, we live close to each other. My wife makes about 30% of what I make. I do believe the kids are better with her given my work schedule.
