I think they are the same.

What's your opinion?

In my mind, "casual dating" means dating with no sex; "friends with benefits" means sex with no dating.

I've always felt that its about whether or not you think there might be a future to your association with someone.

FWB= you doubt there is a committed future to the association but consider them a good friend and find them interesting, attractive and enjoyable enough to sleep with. You're still willing to accept other dates with the understanding that things will end if you find interest in someone else. Perhaps you're too busy for going out much so you and a friend provide each other companionship and sex.

Casual dating = you think there might be a chance at something more meaningful but you're willing to let it develop at a relaxed pace. You don't know them well enough to make a judgment call yet. You are still willing to accept other dates. Sex hasn't been had yet.

That's what I always thought as well.

IMO, the best method is to directly ask the person making the statement what they mean by it. Each person's interpretation is unique.

This quote is a great way to start that conversation :)
