I'm not really in touch with the convention.

This is the first year I've had any friends/acquaintances in my phone who are at all "with it."

On Christmas I got a "Merry Christmas!" text from the female roommate I'm less close to. I figured she sent a text out to everyone in her phone. I wrote back, "thanks, you too!"

Today I get a text from J, the guy I'm trying to get over and was dating until recently: "HAPPY NEW YEEEAAAArrrrsss.." Probably another mass text. Do people respond to these things? I want to stay friends with him, but I also don't want to look like a fool if I'm the only one who responds.

Even if it's a mass text and you are the only one who responds, that's not looking like a fool. It makes you the nice one. Just keep it simple and he can send a more personalized message if he wants to in response. I usually just say the same thing you did if you aren't sure. "Thanks, you too."

I always respond, even if it's a mass txt. I think that's good etiquette. I don't think you would look like a fool for responding.

If it's truly a good friend that is texting you well wishes, then by all means reply. However, if this guy that you're trying to get over doesn't deserve your response...
