I went to an all girl's catholic highschool and as a result, nearly all of my friends have these really nice big families who spend sundays together going to church, having barbeques where all the relatives get together and all this other sweet familyish stuff. I was the only "only child" in my whole year level.

A big school yard topic that we used to talk about was children and marriage. My friends would describe their perfect wedding, man and the possible names of their children... and think I was really weird for not really caring about any of it.

Who else doesn't care if they get married? I would like to share my life with somebody but I don't need a legal document, diamond or even a massive expensive celebration dedicated to declaring my love for somebody to prove it. The weddings I have been to were very beautiful but I would much rather spend money travelling with my partner than having a wedding and a conflict diamond on my finger.

Despite all of this, it is a societal norm to get married so if my partner didn't want to marry me, I would probably feel insecure about how strong his feelings were for me and wonder if he was on the look out for someone more marriage material.

As for children, I think I could live a perfectly fulfilling life without having them. What do you say?

I'm married (required by H's societal conventions) but would be just as happy without the legal document and have definitely never dreamt of my wedding day. Have never wanted children. On the travelling versus diamond ring, travelling is the clear winner.

I say as long as you don't do damage to people, just live your life the way it's right for you.
