I suck at gift-giving and I am running out of time to do it :O

My girlfriend has already given me a few XMas gifts because they are size-sensitive and she wanted to be able to return them before it was too late in the event that things didn't fit quite right (jeans, jacket, etc). It's also a strong possibility that she's also gotten me other clothes... and possibly something more, I don't know.

However, I have no idea what to get her. I was thinking of drawing a card for her (I do a lot of art as a hobby) and maybe baking her some cookies/making some cupcakes in the shape of some cartoon characters that she really likes.

But I need some help with the actual GIFT portion. I may get her something from Kate Spade, as she adores that place. She's a huge foodie/gastronome (trying new restaurants in the city) but I can't think of a cool gift that might appeal to this.

The other problem is that my girlfriend is REALLY GOOD at firing off ideas left and right. It takes me so, so, so much longer to think of a gift for someone. However, my girlfriend and I usually spend weekends together and an occasional weekday here and there, and it's a bit of an issue. I have no time to sneak out and buy gifts, let alone ponder/think of something to get her.

Could really, really use some advice here! Thanks!

Why don't you just ask her what she'd like?

Ruins the element of surprise -- and I don't want her thinking that I don't know her well enough to get something for her (when in fact I feel like I do, but it still doesn't mean I know what to get her).

If she's a foodie, I suggest taking her to a really nice restaurant you haven't been to. In Toronto, we have something called Winterlicious, where a lot of the upscale restaurants offer a fixed menu at a fixed price this time of year. It's a great way for mere mortals like me to eat at the places the celebrities eat. NYC might have something similar.

Girls love chocolate, so maybe you can find a chocolatier and have some custom hand-made chocolates made. It's a nice touch and has worked well for me.

I'm big on activity gifts, so concert/show tickets are another safe go-to. If you guys are serious, maybe a trip out of town for the weekend is in order. AC and Boston are close.

that's the beauty of online shopping. maybe you need to be more observant. is she a commuter or drives a lot? does she have an mp3 player? find out!

If she likes Kate Spade, she'd probably love anything from there. Maybe get her something from Kate Spade and take her someplace special. You're in NYC right? Have you been to Blue Hill Farm? They have a restaurant in the city and a huge farm up in Westchester. The farm is gorgeous and you can get a five or eight course meal. The menu is never set, just the ingredients they've grown or killed that day. So everything is fresh. Very unique place.

I probably wouldn't do the resturant because it isn't something to unwrap. Save that for another occassion.

How many gifts is she giving you? If she's bought you 8 things, you're probably going to feel like a jerk opening all those presents while you only give her one or two. (I wouldn't normally say that, but she seems to have bought you a lot)

Kate Spade bags are expensive, I'm not sure if you realize that. If you choose to get one, get a less common one (ie not a big black or red bag).

Jewelry is always an option. Just think- does she wear earrings? does she wear necklaces? does she tend to wear gold or silver?

Etsy is a wonderful website. They have some pretty unique items and homemade gifts submitted by the general public.
