he doesn't ever talk on the phone.

he says "i'll call later" and its always a text I get later, not a call.

I call, he doesn't answer, but responds with a text 2 seconds later saying "hey"

when I say "I'll call later", he says "just text me".

I don't have to worry about not hearing back from him, thats not the issue. I just think it's odd. We're out of college... old enough for phone conversations I feel... should I just be happy he's responding and writing back, and not care so much its not on the phone?

Do you ever have face to face real live conversations?

If he's love-shy he will text over using the phone. Dr. Brian Gilmartin explains the phone thing in detail in his book "Shyness and love".

There is also a documentary being made on the subject.

Is he married?

This.

Or maybe he has a live-in girlfriend.

Either way, if it really bothers you why don't you tell him "Hey, I'm super busy and don't really have time to text. Give me a call later tonight after ___o'clock"

If he follows up with a text or doesn't bother to call at all it means he doesn't respect your wishes and wasn't that serious about you anyway.

I agree with this, test him on it and break it off if he doesn't follow through.

Some people just prefer texting.

Then what's the purpose of a phone?

He's hiding something.
