I don't want to come across as a hater but I really don't get why women fall for a guy just because he can play a few notes. I'm not gay but I know how to recognize an attractive guy. When I see women fall for a relatively bland looking guy just because he can play the guitar (which I find totally unsexy), I really wonder whether I understand women.

Any thoughts?

I've never witnessed this. With FAMOUS musicians it's definitely the case, but not so with ordinary guys who play in small local bands or play guitar or piano as a hobby. I can personally attest that most musicians I know (myself included) are chronically single/celibate (especially guitar players)

Agreed, PC. It's usually just a phase, rather than a long-term thing. It's like anything else; from the outside, all that you see is the glamour and the excitement. Once you truly get into it, you start to see a lot of the downsides to the different life, and it's something that many people either can't or don't want to live with on a long term basis.

And that's not a slam against the women who walk away. Those who get in certain activities have to realize that it may become their life and most people won't be able to handle it. They will lose some friends as well as potential girlfriends. It's just one of those things you either accept, or find a different thing to do.

Taking the musician as the example. If he gets gigs out of it, any girl dating him has to accept that...

  • He will be out many evenings and weekends. This ain't a 9-5 job.
  • He will be around a lot of booze and drugs, even if he doesn't do them himself.
  • He will be around a lot of young women who are scantily dressed, drunk as a skunk and horny as hell. They're good for business; you can't tell them to leave.
  • Money will be sporadic and some of it will go back into the band for new instruments/equipment.
  • If things go well, he may go on tour and be away for extended periods of time. At first it'll just be days, but success will extend that into weeks and months. All the above factors still apply, regardless of which town/country the tour takes him.

And that's probably just the tip of the iceberg. That kind of trust is a lot to ask of anyone. It's hard to say to someone, "if you want to be with me, you have to learn a whole new set of rules for life."

So, like PC said, more often than not, it's only a phase.

My SO and I are both musicians with "regular" 9-5 jobs. Music brought us together in the literal sense, but it's not ultimately what sustains our relationship in the long run.

The bullet points you've made here are spot on Johnny. Gigging is tough on even the strongest relationships and everyone should be prepared to handle these truths, regardless of gender.

Doing anything that puts you on a stage gets you laid. Comedians, Athletes, Musicians, Jugglers.... hell Bozo the Clown probably got tons of women.

I'm not sure why... I suppose it shows you have confidence, or that people pay attention to you. ....?

Whatever it is... It's kind of stupid and luckily there are lots of women who are not that shallow or who have matured to a point where they don't engage in this sort of sillyness.

Why do musicians get more women?

Because they are seen/perceived to be better at expressing themselves.

Wouldn't it be the trophy aspect?

'My guy plays a guitar in a band', or 'my man plays the drums and his band will be performing at the whatever club on the weekend'?

Makes for good eye-turning chit-chat amongst the ladies. :)

Why do musicians ge more women?

I've been drumming for 14 years, in several bands, currently in a rock/metal band, jazz aswell...and I can tell you, who are these musicians you speak of!? Because I want to be one!

<----- That's what I look like, and I don't get even a crumb of what apparently a musician is supposed to "get". I rate myself as 5. And I think I will add to what someone has already said:

Just because you are in band/musician, it does not mean you are getting pussy. My bass player (althought amazing) never gets anything. And do you know why? Simple. He is not very attractive. He is funny, confident and can talk to anyone...but he doesn't get any ladies. However, my guitarist, who just so happens to be very good looking...OMG gets women everywhere. He just has to stand there with his drink and girls come up to him. Must be epic to have that power :(

Women are obsessed with status and popularity

Because having talent is attractive.

Funny, it never worked for me.

I rate you a 10 for being a drummer. :)

Don't sweat this stuff and concentrate on what really matters, the music.

I'm usually too busy thinking about the music at a gig to really cash in on the whole thing. Though I should work on that:cool: According to the female bassist/singer in my band I don't notice how women are reacting to me. She also happens to be an ex.. go figure. There's hardly any time between sets to even get into a conversation and try to get something started. When I'm playing (lead guitar & vocals) I really get into it. My whole mind and body are in it, my eyes are closed and I'm moving in some pretty interesting ways. The women I've been with say the passion I play with and how I move is a total turn on and it does translate in other ways.

I also have a good full time day job. So I don't have a ton of free time between that, rehearsals and gigs. So long term the lifestyle is difficult for most women to deal with. I was talking with a girl once and told her "Music will always be my first mistress." She didn't like that. But it's the truth, women have come and gone but the music is always there. I'm not looking to be with a ton of women and prefer a LTR so it's not all about the girls for me.. but it is a nice fringe benefit.

Very well stated.
