Hey Guys,

My first date was yesterday, and it was really fun. There was no problem with the conversation.

Facts and Stats

  • The date lasted over 9hrs
  • We had lunch and dinner on the date
  • We walked all over the city (to the extent that the scale says I lost weight).
  • We played 2 games of bowling, 3 games of pool and 3 games of air hockey. (He won the bowling, 2 of pool and 1 of air hockey)
  • There were hot women all over the city, and I stared at all of them, and he said that he thought that was cool.
  • He literally paid for everything, between $100 and $200 for the whole date (and then said I was a cheap date (wtf!!), because I wasn't drinking alcohol)
  • At home time, we were surrounded by people geting on the bus, I was getting on, and he kissed my cheek, then I figured he wanted to kiss my lips, so I kissed his somewhat passionately (not too much with the crowd around, just enough that it was a little more than a chaste peck)
  • It was lots of fun, we mostly talked about geek stuff (which games we played, and he said he would be my friend of the Starcraft 2 Battlenet, and he was impressed that I have DOSbox).
  • We talked a little about beliefs systems, he came off as an atheist, an I came off as a really weird crazy person (that obviously was my big strike for the date, but he said I redeemed myself by being open to the possibility that I am completely wrong.) Note to self: avoid belief system talk, if any future dates occur.

What do you guys think?

Actually I was just wondering where you been recently. Seems like a good first date. No show stoppers was there? No major concerns other than the beliefs talk? I'm intrigued though, if he is an atheist and you came off as weird crazy, that suggest to me you have Christian or otherwise spiritual beliefs? Do you feel in any way you guys were conflicting over these views and that is potentially problematic?

Well in his profile, he described himself as agnostic (which is supposedly undecided, open to being convinced either way), but after talking to him, he came across pretty closed except to science. So I think calling himself agnostic was wishful thinking. My spirituality is really diverse and so I can talk to people from all different sides (through non judgement on my side), but since most people tend to judge poeple who believe differently, I don't really fit in with anyone completely. Thank goodness I have my friend Jen, the 1 person I can share completely and who gets me. Since I have stated (even in my profile) only short term relationships, it shouldn't be a problem. It's only a bit hard, when I see something and get really excited about it, and I can't share it (even if they were standing right beside me and saw it too), because I know they will just get all sciencey and down to earth, and lose the wonder and delight.

The whole conversation has had me thinking this morning. 'How can I be so sure anything I believe is anything more then delusion, when there is no reasonable way to prove or even explain it to someone else? How do you explain faith to the faithless? And if it makes me a happier person, and more capable of dealing when bad things happen, does it even matter if it's pretend?

So you see in answer to your question 'are conflicting views problematic?' When people aren't too close it shouldn't be a problem, but my spirituality is my whole way of life, so I feel it would be impossible to be really close to someone who didn't get it, at least a little bit. It's the difference between going on a holiday, and going on a quest. It's imagination and mindset.

Anyway thanks for reading if you are. Sometimes it's just easier for me to make sense of thoughts when I type them out in front of me.:o

BTW Surrealist, I have been lurking on ls in the last week, but haven't felt like I have had anything to say of value, so I have been quiet. It's nice to know I was missed.:)

Hehe no worries.... I can understand what you're saying in the above post to some extent. I'll divulge, I became a Christian almost 20 years ago, quite powerful conversion, from atheist to Christian believer almost overnight. No major events were happening in my life at the time, just started becoming aware of some things in the world I guess as I was growing up and then one thing to the next and I was a believer in God. Since then I have done the whole church thing but have since become disillusioned with it, though I have never lost my Christian faith. Apart from this, I have experienced a few spiritual encounters, nothing mind blowing but certainly made for a good read, even for those on a bodybuilding forum when I shared. Anyway point being, I have a faith as well, but I tend to find it doesn't help me so much with day-to-day problems but helps me with knowing that this world and our physical experience is only temporary and that we as humans are much more than flesh and blood alone - this is almost scientifically proven by way of peoples' out-of-body experiences having noted their environment at the time of the experience being consistent with environmental cues of witnesses to the events. Bit complicated to explain. So it is not unreasonable to suggest that science and spirituality do mesh and complement each other. There is quite a lot of science these days devoted to the spiritual and paranormal. :)

Thanks for sharing your story with me Surrealist.

My journey took me to explore many different faiths/ideologies, including putting on the atheist hat for a bit. I love conversations with people about ideas, where it's not about either party asserting something as true, and then being closed, but rather seeing where the ideas go, and being open to seeing something neither could see before the conversation. Which is why I love going to philosophy groups.

However I have trouble communicating lofty ideas, I feel meaning is lost when translated into language. Also vocabularly is a factor. Imagine I was talking to someone who understood multiple different vocabularies without prejudice (i.e. scientific, religious, new age, pagan vocabularies etc). I could choose my words from a much larger pool, and possibly make more accurate choices to carry my idea. But if I know the person is only really going to accept scientific terminology and judge words from those other places due to his experiences/feelings, that limits what I can convey. Suddenly alot of words are taboo, and I am left trying to describe an idea using little more then wave/particle duality and perhaps quantum entanglement. Even fractal nature of reality is too hard for some people to grasp.

What will be the deciding factor between two people with differing minds is whether they can agree & unify through the heart.

All the best to you.

Lol, Starcraft. What kind of girl plays that kind of game? :p

I would be impressed if a girl plays starcraft 2, not to mention video games. She does what she wants and obviously does not care what society thinks of her that she plays video games.

I love starcraft 2, I just hit silver league on multiplexer. Its a start but damn this game is a awesome RTS. I don't like RTS like the new dawn of war. I like to build my economy and attack lol..

Well I probably would rank bronze league, but haven't completed league matches yet. But I played starcraft1 for over a decade. It's my favourite game, and in the last few years I mainly played custom maps, zombie defense and lurker individual defense were 2 of my favourite maps.

Anyway can you please pm me so we can be friends on SC2 Battlenet, and don't forget your character code.:D

You sound like you did good. I'd have to know more about what exactly you meant by "a really weird crazy person" though. There's many a devil in that detail. If the guy said he's agnostic but seemed to have strong commitments away from religion, he probably just softened his atheism because it has so much baggage attached to it. To many people in my family even to this day being an atheist is analogous to being the "horn-ed one" himself rather than just a modern thinker who opts out of hand-me-down faith lore. So, unless you're a crusader for Christ or something and you like this guy, it's icksnay on the eligionray and everything should be good. There's still time to get up to speed on fractal geometry. :p

Thanks Feeling Frisky, and I am no crusader for anything, that's for sure.

I texted him and asked for his sc2 info, and we just spent the last2 hrs playing on the battlenet, and he did really chivalrous things like using an scv to repair my buildings.

I am still such a noob, so we couldn't beat 2 very hard ai's, which was kinda lame, but in my defence I haven't spent much time playing since I got the game.
