what do you consider good manners? bad manners? dead manners?

i'm talking about living etiquette rather than dead decorum.

 

i have noticed some completely different manners in my small part of canada (as opposed to an even smaller part of the states); but it's a neutral comparison. what do you notice in terms of manners or lack thereof in friends, boy/girl friends, acquaintances etc? does it make a signifigant difference what region you are in?

what do you consider to be good manners or bad manners?

 

for example, i abhor cell phones in lecture. i actually find them hideously ill-mannered. i recognize that this distast comes from a belief that education should be a higher priority than the merchantile enterprise of useless cell phone calls. a lot of first year students have no problem whatsoever with them, and take the attitude that since they are paying so much for their educations, they should be able to come and go to answer calls as they need to.

 

for good manners, i like door opening, a great deal. i don't actually know why.

Bad Manners:

Cell phones interuptting conversations

Not holding the door open for someone.

Gossip(i do this)

general rudeness

 

Good manners:

opposite of all bad manners.

Respect.

Giving up subway seats to old people.

I can't stand when people have their cell phones on during (out to eat) dinner, or even worse, they ANSWER them.

chewing with mouth closed = good

talking and chewing with mouth open = bad

 

quietly talking on your cell phone in public = good

talking loud/almost yelling on cell phone in public (especially about stuff we don't want to hear) = bad

 

changing a diaper in the restroom in a public place = good

changing a diaper in the middle of a store or (gulp) restaurant = bad
