OceanGirl Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I have never been to an opera but always wanted to go. My boss and another co-worker are opera veterans so they invited me to go an opera that's accessible to first timers. They gave me a choice between: The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart) or Rigoletto (Vendi). They have both seen them already but don't mind watching any of them with me again. What would you recommend?
sweetjasmine Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I'd recommend Figaro, but it's my favorite, so I'm biased. Rigoletto is also great and a good "first-timer" opera, so you really can't go wrong here. Maybe you could read the synposes online and listen to some of the music on youtube to help you decide.
TaraMaiden Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 "When God wishes to Listen to music, the Angels play Bach. When the Angels want to listen to Music, they play Mozart." Anything by Mozart is sublime. He was a complete Musical genius, and unbeatable. Look him up. His music is mind-blowingly stupendous. Mind you, if you have the chance, Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly' moves mountains....
Author OceanGirl Posted November 7, 2010 Author Posted November 7, 2010 I accidentally posted this in the wrong section.. ooops. Thanks ladies, I was leaning towards Mozart but am going to listen few youtube clips first. I was also considering Midsummer Night's Dream, but both of my collegues think that that's not really a good choice for a first timer.
crosswordfiend Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 You can't go wrong with either. Although know that Figaro will be considerably longer running roughly 3.5 hours with intermissions.
anne1707 Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Either would be good My only concern - and it is a bit of a t/j - but is it wise to go out with your boss (even if a co-worker is present)? Isn't there "some history" between you in terms of finding each other attractive?
Author OceanGirl Posted November 7, 2010 Author Posted November 7, 2010 That's all long gone anne. I told them to invite their wives too and they are going to. We haven't made definite plans when to go yet.
loverofloveandstuff Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I would go Mozart because I'm a big fan but you won't go wrong either way. Speaking of operas, I saw Romeo and Juliet not long ago. Juliet was played by a dude and you should've seen the faces of the oldies around me! I think that was more entertaining than the opera itself.
