Author Lorelai Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 Good job, keep it up! I'm proud of you, it's really hard to truly change your body, but you'll get there. Seriously check out swing dancing too. It's huge cardio and lots of fun! Plus there are a lot of sweet guys there. I'll have to check that out. I also do yoga, but more to keep flexibility and as a warm-up/cool-down than for any kind of cardio or strength type training (I've heard pilates is better if you're actually trying to tone from a stretching type routine) so I don't really count it. The elliptical has a strength training program on it that I use for that. This is good advice, I'd just like to add one thing. There is a BIG difference between health-conscious and health-aware. .... Start shopping at trader joe's and whole foods and stay away from safeway. Pay less attention to the percentages and more attention to the ingredients. But don't ignore calories! I used to work in a health food store, and the amount of calories in a lot of the organic foods sold there is deceiving. One place I do not scrimp on though is the quality of oils or fats that I do eat. Real butter or olive oil only -- which has made most fried foods made by others completely off-limits even in small amounts. If I'm craving fried-tasting stuff I make falafel balls, paint them very lightly in olive oil, and broil them. I also eat a lot of fish. (BTW: since I can't seem to give up caffeine working third shift, Crystal Light makes a drink mix powder you can add to a bottle of water. 120mg of caffeine and 10 calories for a 16oz bottle of water... may have a few more calories than black coffee but also has 20% of the RDA for most of the B vitamins.... and is mostly water with no salt.) In the end, weight loss truly is calories in vs calories burned.... eating better quality food helps with vitamins, which helps keep the body better able to burn calories and feel better.... and exercise helps not only with burn but with getting the metabolism used to actually burning calories instead of storing them. (I can tell you a story about my friend who is recovering from bulimia who is now my gym partner -- when she was first released from the hospital she was gaining on 800 calories a day, but after about two weeks of going to the gym she was able to eat 1400 and maintain the post-hospitalization goal weight. There's NWIH that we're burning 1200 calories each trip to the gym -- we go 3 times a week).
Author Lorelai Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 Oh, forgot to add: At safeway that loaf of bread will have 30 ingredients. Do you know WTF all that stuff is? I sure don't... Sadly... I usually do. Comes from taking a lot of chemistry classes. And that actually makes some of them even scarier than not knowing.
Star Gazer Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 ... walking into A&F and seeing all those naked supermen staring down at me and suddenly realizing that I felt insecure. I guess that's how women feel all the time? Not cool. Someone gets it! Imagine having those Superman images follow you EVERYWHERE YOU GO, not just A&F. That's what women deal with every single day.
nddb Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 It's insulting to call them fetishists! It implies something abnormal or niche, when that isn't the case at all. If the media would back the f*** off for a bit guys naturally prefer bigger women. X2 I agree with this.

Biology is when I had my epiphanies about carbs, sugar, fat, saturated fat, etc. It's amazing to me that people expect fat they eat to stay fat once it's inside their bodies. It's as if people don't understand that food gets processed and broken down. I apologize for my little tirade then, you're probably more educated about this than I am. Someone gets it! Imagine having those Superman images follow you EVERYWHERE YOU GO, not just A&F. That's what women deal with every single day. lol, I do get it. I went to a college-prep/alternative high school so I've seen "Killing Me Softly" and all the anti-media stuff regarding feminism. I'm down with it.

Nah -- I hope this thread will be helpful for others too, which is why I posted a few of the things I've been doing to help with losing. The reason I'm careful about the fats is not that they are fat, but making sure that I'm getting the better fatty acids. Linoleic and alpha-linoleic acid are two of the ones our bodies can't make, and olive oil is one of the better sources of them (and margarine has too many trans fats). Fish has the omega-3s and omega-6s. I'd rather not waste the calories in fats that aren't going to give me the stuff I actually need. Susan Powter's "fat makes you fat" thing only worked because fat is more calorically dense -- and spawned hundreds of "fat free!" products that have as many if more calories from sugar. Mutter. But I'm preaching to the choir too

And we wonder why America is the fattest nation... Keep on doing what you're doing, just kick ass on the cardio and you'll get there. Seriously though, swing dancing is a huge cardio workout and it's more fun.
