Scarlett513 Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 (edited) I joined OkCupid a week ago. I figured I'd give it a shot since it's free (I normally use eHarmony). Already I received a message from some guy accusing me of using fake pictures - and then said he wouldn't blame me for not wanting anyone I know finding out I have to "troll the Internet for dudes" to get a date. Two days later I get a message from some guy I've never spoken to telling me that I'm "insufferable" and mocking me for describing myself as open-minded. I looked at his profile, and the whole thing was totally obnoxious. It was obviously created with the intention of being offensive. I'm not bothered by it but what the heck is with these people? Anyone else have experiences like this? Is it common? Edited October 17, 2010 by Scarlett513
theBrokenMuse Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Heh. It's quite unfortunate how many people feel so insignificant in their real lives that they are willing to stoop to being obnoxious trolls online to garner some attention for themselves. Ignore them. As for the guy who declared that your pics are fake, don't feel bad. I've been accused of being a fake account and then blocked for disagreeing with someone's point of view before. The world is full of characters. Lucky, lucky us....
Teknoe Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Wow, I never had that happen to me. It's the internet. Everyone's a critic and a tough guy on the 'net. Let it roll off your back. Don't validate him or give him any power over you. Your self-worth is not based on what some yahoo thinks of you who's never met you. Totally ridiculous that people stoop to these low levels.
GooseChaser Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I recently joined OkCupid and have been a member for a few weeks, and nothing like that has happened for me. My experience so far has been positive. I'm sorry that's happening. :[
Insanitylater Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 It could be another women, using a fake mans profile to bash and annoy other girls. Probably not, but anythings possible. Before you laugh at my suggestion, remember there was that mother that made a fake teenage boy myspace account and tormented a girl into committing suicide. All kinds of weirdos online.

Author Scarlett513 Posted October 17, 2010 Author Posted October 17, 2010 Well I guess it's not that common, so I'm wondering why I'm being targeted. I'm not taking it seriously and my self esteem is high enough to not let that get to me. It just makes me wonder about it. I forgot to mention before that the day after I got the initial message from the guy who accused me of having fake pictures, he sent another message telling me that a sexy, intelligent woman would have responded to him and that it's the average women like me who would ignore him! I was considering deleting my account but since it seems some of you have hD positive experiences, maybe I'll wait it out a bit.

You just had a rocky start by running into some of less stable members of the OKC community. Just ignore those messages and keep going; It'll get better.

Sounds like that guy really, really wants your attention, and thinks that insulting you is the way to get it. My advice is not to give it to him. Hang in there. There are cool people out there too.
brainygirl Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I've had guys tell me I must weigh 400 pounds because I don't have semi-nude swimsuit shots. I've had guys proposition me for sex over the IM ap. I've have people I was emailing with call me an idiot, gold digger, and all kinds of things. They do it because their own insecurities make them feel small, so they make others feel smaller. I bloke them or report them.

It's not in their interests to have idiots like that harassing people who post their profiles on it in good faith. Even if he's operating with a fake profile, they might be able to block his IP address so that he can't keep pestering and insulting disinterested women.
