How do you respond when they say the L word for the first time?

What if they say "I love you" and you were not expecting it. What do you say in response if you aren't sure you feel the same way yet?

I remember, I said: "What? You're drunk."

 

Then the next morning, I called him out on it and he played dumb.

 

A few months down the road, when the "i love yous" had been established already, I asked him if he remembered telling me he loved me that first time. He said: "Uh yeah, of course I remembered... and how you called me out the next day."

Im not sure if I love him or not, so I simply couldnt return the words... I told him that it meant a lot for me to hear him say that, but that I wasnt ready...

 

Actually panda, we had had some glasses of wine that night... And I think I made a joke (bad taste?...... I was nervous!) about it being the wine talking... And neither of us have brought it up since that night, so I admire your cahones to call him out on it!

 

Im pretty damn sure my guy remembers saying it though.

This has only happened to me once (on the phone) and she was 'drinking' and it was inappropriate and I answered as honestly as I could, that 'I really don't know you well enough to say that' which was true. She called me back over a year later. Guess I need to work a bit more on my technique. True story

 

BTW, I'm not bashful about ILY's, even saying that to my close male friends. However, I have to *feel* it to *say* it.
