Why do we long for those who hurt us most? Wanting the ex back.

I've been reading alot of threads lately of people who have been abused, cheated on, and then dumped... But who still crave to win their ex back. Not only that, but these people place the blame on everything that happened on themselves - seeking to apologize to the person who tarnished them so.

I am no different.

For those unfamiliar with my story, I dated a girl over the summer for a period of 3-4 months. During this time she lied nonstop, disrespected me, and found out she's been cheating the entire time I knew her. After finding out, I gave her an intense verbal lashing and both parties dumped her. Again, another lashing when she lashed back at me. Now that it's been a few weeks, sadly enough, I feel myself missing her - and regretting those lashes she just may have deserved. No, I have no intention of following the impulse to contact her... Not for a few months anyway.

I'm trying to rationalize this feeling, as from a logical standpoint it doesn't make any sense. The thing/person stressing me out the most, causing me the most pain is finally gone. Why do I crave it once more? My only rationale is during that period, we did get close, and I can't help but have had feelings for her. No rationale will trump emotion. Those rose colored glasses aren't falling off, and I'm still blinded to the intense amount of bad moments we had.

Those are statements I needed to let out. That being said, how can you all rationalize your similar impulses to get back together with an ex?

It's simple, we crave the feeling of something familiar whether it was unhealthy, or not.

We don't like to see weeks, months or years of hard work go down the drain.

It's no different than if you had worked on writing a book for a year and came home to see someone lighting it on fire.
