My life changed dramatically in the past week. My best friend had a roommate crisis and needed a place to live. My place is too big for me and he's coming to stay for a few months.

I'm thrilled about this. He's optimistic and funny. He likes to cook and clean. He has a boyfriend so he'll be spending some nights away.

I hope this works out well. I haven't had a roommate in many years. I said it would be good for me to have a roomie so I don't become an eccentric cat lady.

Now that the decision sunk in I need some guidance. I haven't lived with a platonic roommate in 20 years!

I understand the money, but how do people handle sharing other stuff- food, shopping for essentials (eg. trash bags)...

And rules of apt, etc.

This is bigger than I thought, but it's still a great living situation.

Usually essentials are bought from a shared pool of money which everyone contributes a certain amount to each month.

Food depends on arrangements. Most people I've lived with just got their own individual food, but I've never really lived with close friends before. I'd imagine that close friends would be more likely to share.

Thanks Elswyth.

The shared pool of money for essentials is a great idea. Never would have thought of that.

This is going to be interesting. He's currently on unemployment & likes to cook and clean. I hate doing that sort of stuff so it's likely he's going to share some meals with me & do more than his fair share of housework. I guess I'm going to need to step up my game & divide up the chores evenly. And chip in money for food or go grocery shopping with him.

He also studied bartending so he likes to make drinks for people.

The more I think about this arrangement, the more I like it. :)
