TwilightSky Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I've often pondered that question. A lot of the people in my life seem stuck in the same "stale patterns" state, that aren't helpful (just different patterns of course). I feel like there is no realistic hope for me. It seems to me that optimism creates an illusion.
LuckyLady13 Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 People do drastically change for the better! I've seen it happen and I'm actually one of them. However, the closest people to me are stagnant and have been for years. My best friend of 20 years is a prime example. I found that being around people who are the type of person I wanted to become was the best thing I ever did. I still love my best friend but being around stagnant people made it harder for me to change in the ways I wanted to. My family is also stagnant. I got a new job around the exact type of people I wanted to be more like. I still got to stay best friends with my best friend but had great influences around me who aren't stagnant at all. The best of both worlds?
Author TwilightSky Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 Good point, being around certain people can reinforce the perpetual negative patterns, I guess. I'd type more, but I have to pee really bad.
USMCHokie Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 Yes, people are capable of change, but true change of one's fundamental nature and character takes time...often a very long time...but it is possible... And I agree with LuckyLady that people are most heavily influenced by the company they keep, and it will certainly affect how capable one is of change. We are all prone to "stale patterns" in our life...even I feel like I'm stuck in a "rut-tine" in life...sometimes new people, new interests, or even a new environment are what we need to be a catalyst for that change...
Tayla Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 In speaking of core values then no they are set, they can be altered and bent yet mostly we retain those values thru out life. If you are speaking of changes in behavior or outlook in life, absolutely its feasible and often encouraged thru trials and tribulations. Try to be wise when growing and changing, sometimes it was "those" very folks that get cast to the side that helped you to get where you are...They at the least deserve regard in that manner.

Author TwilightSky Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 It does for me also Yeah, it sucks, doesn't it?
skydiveaddict Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Yeah, it sucks, doesn't it? Yes it does. There can be traumas in one's life that can prevent a change for the better.
Author TwilightSky Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 Yes it does. There can be traumas in one's life that can prevent a change for the better. True, but most "positive thinkers" don't see it that way because their lives are going relatively smashingly.
skydiveaddict Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 True, but most "positive thinkers" don't see it that way because their lives are going relatively smashingly. Most "positive thinkers" dont have those traumas to deal with. I can be a "positive thinker" as well, but it doesnt change reality
